LEAGUE CITY – Clear Creek High School football coach Darrell Warden said he would never be confused with someone who entertains people for a living.

But as the League City Chamber of Commerce’s annual Kickoff by the Creek luncheon approached, he got a call from assistant athletic director Debbie Fuchs.

“She told all of us coaches that we needed to do a better job of entertaining the crowds (at the luncheon),” Warden explained as he gave his annual preseason speech to the assembled business leaders Aug. 14 at Clear Falls High School.

The Wildcats coach took Fuchs’ appeal to heart and penned a poem.

Titled, “How do I Entertain You, I do not Know,” Warden put to rhyme his struggles in coming up with an entertaining presentation.

With a dry delivery, Warden explained how he thought about doing a rap song. His children begged him not to embarrass them like that.

Warden wasn’t the only one to give the crowd a chuckle. Clear Falls coach Mike Zierlein cracked jokes and even drew several penalty flags from guest referee Thea Lockett, with Houston Methodist St. John’s Hospital.

Judges League City Mayor Tim Paulissen, Dickinson City Councilman William King and chamber board chairwoman Bonnie Benkula preferred Warden’s poem and selected him the winner of the luncheon’s Traveling Trophy.

Also on hand for their presentations about the upcoming season were Clear Springs Coach Frank Maldonado, Dickinson coach John Snelson, Clear Lake coach Sam Smith and Clear Brook coach Paul Lanier.

The luncheon also featured performances from the various drill teams, cheerleaders and the drum lines from Dickinson and Clear Falls high school bands.
