ALVIN – The Galveston College baseball team struck early Thursday, scoring three runs in the first two innings before holding on for a 3-1 win over host Alvin Community College in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Whitecaps (14-5) belted 12 hits but had trouble getting runners across the plate.
A double by Jose Garcia in the first inning plated Ross McWhorter for a 1-0 lead. In the second, a squeeze bunt from Joshua Santos-Torres drove in Kevin Macias from third, and a single through the left side by Nathan Turner sent Zach Drouillard home for a 3-0 lead.
Those runs were more than enough for starter Guillaume Blanchette, who pitched a complete-game shutout.
Blanchette gave up five hits without an earned run and finished with four strikeouts and three walks.
Drouillard, Garcia, Turner and Raphael Gladu each had two hits for Galveston.
In the nightcap, Alvin rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 5, and the score stayed that way late into extra innings until the game was suspended in the ninth.
Garcia hit a two-run homer in the fourth for the Whitecaps and had three RBIs before play was halted. McWhorter was 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles and drove in two runs.
