LEAGUE CITY — Zack Esquivel held Clear Lake’s bats in check, and Austin Adams got Clear Creek’s offense going early as the Wildcats downed the Falcons, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon in the District 24-5A opener for both clubs.

Esquivel earned the win, pitching six shutout innings. He gave up only one hit, to the first batter he faced, and after getting out of a first-inning jam, he settled in and struck out seven batters the rest of the way, walking only one.

Adams smacked a two-run triple in the second inning to get the Wildcats on the scoreboard.

Clear Creek went ahead 4-0 with two more runs in the third, one coming on an RBI single from Harrison Hill and the other on a sacrifice fly by Sean Kelly.

Michael Roland put the Wildcats ahead 5-0 in the sixth on a two-out RBI single to center field.

Clear Lake plated two runs with two outs in the seventh on a pair of RBI doubles off relief pitcher Landon Etzel. But Etzel was able to get the final Falcons’ out on a shot to left field to close out the game.

The Wildcats scored their five runs on four hits and left six runners on base. Clear Lake finished with five hits and left six runners stranded.
