“Girls’ night out” can be great fun, but an upcoming “girls’ morning out” half marathon and 5K promise the camaraderie and high spirits of those nighttime jaunts without the hangovers and regrettable phone calls.
The Divas Half Marathon makes its Galveston debut Sunday as a glammed-up race that will appeal to fast runners with its flat, relatively straight course, and entice those who prefer fun times to fast times with feather boas, tiaras, Champagne and roses.
While the Divas Half Marathon is a women’s event, men are welcome to enter the accompanying 5K. Both races start and finish near Saengerfest Park in downtown Galveston.
The half-marathon follows a unique course that includes a full mile along stately Avenue O as well as a five-mile stretch on the Seawall and a loop through Beachtown on the island’s East Beach. Along the course, “diva stations” will dispense not just the usual water and Gatorade, but also the accouterments of diva-dom, culminating in a boa and tiara station shortly before the finish line that will turn even the most exhausted half marathoners into triumphant divas for their finish line photos.
The on-course fun won’t slow down the competitive runners, who will be pursuing awards for the top three finishers and for the three fastest in each of the five-year age groups. In the 5K, women will be eligible for overall and age groups awards, while there will be awards for the first three overall male finishers.
All half-marathon finishers will receive medals, sparkly baubles organizers call “the most impressive medal ever.”
Registration for the half marathon and 5K is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday at the Health and Fitness Boutique at the Galveston Island Convention Center. The boutique is open to the public and features more than 30 exhibitors with products and services for female athletes.
