To a visitor, members of the Galveston chapter of Kiwanis meet Wednesday morning over breakfast, listen to community speakers and join together in the name of service.

Behind the scenes, the charitable organization is a flurry of fundraising activities, contributing to more than 30 nonprofits, including Galveston College’s Universal Access program, the Galveston ISD Educational Foundation, Lighthouse Charities, UNICEF’s Eliminate project, Ball High and O’Connell Preparatory scholarships, the Ronald McDonald House, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boy Scouts of America, the Harris Kempner Sailing School, the Galveston ISD Teen Health Center, The Salvation Army and holiday food basket delivery.

One of the premiere service clubs on Galveston Island, Kiwanis donates more than $27,000 annually to various youth groups and other charities. As a nonprofit volunteer organization, the club relies on the private sector and the work of its members for its financial support.

The biggest annual fundraiser for the Galveston chapter of Kiwanis is the annual Spring Classic Golf Tournament, which will be Friday at the Galveston Country Club in Galveston. It’s a great opportunity to play a little golf, have a lot of fun and give back to Galveston.

Registration will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and everyone will tee off at 1 p.m. Tickets are $125 each or $500 for a team of four. The format is a four-person Florida scramble for 18 holes at a beautiful course that is usually only open to members and their guests.

Players will have a chance to win a vehicle from Galveston’s Classic Auto group in a hole-in-one contest. Entry includes carts and green fees. There will be a dinner in the clubhouse and prize presentation for winners.

The annual Spring Classic Golf Tournament is a major portion of Kiwanis’ yearly charitable budget, which is why it’s so important for teams to participate. There are still spots left for players and teams, in addition to sponsors.

Please join the members of the Galveston chapter of Kiwanis on the links so we may fulfill our commitment to service.
