The Ball High Lady Tors held a six-run lead through five innings, but saw the Manvel Lady Mavs score a whopping 17 runs in the final three innings to come away with an 18-12 extra-innings win.

After Manvel drew first blood with a run in the top of the second (RBI single by Alayna Pippin), a three-run bottom of the second inning and four-run bottom of the third helped the Lady Tors jump out to a 7-1 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Kat Rodriguez got the Lady Tors’ scoring started with an RBI double shot into left field, and that was followed by a two-run double laced to center field by Janae Girouard for a 3-1 lead.

After Gabby Prets walked, Britaney Shaw was hit by a pitch and Kaila Lee singled, an error on a bases-loaded grounder hit to shortstop by Rowan McLaughlin scored two runs, and two more runs scored on back-to-back grounders to put Ball High ahead, 7-1.

Helped by five errors in the inning by the Lady Tors, Manvel put together an eight-run top of the sixth to take a 9-7 lead. The Lady Mavs also got a go-ahead, two-out three-run home run by Ari Woodard in the frame.

Despite that, the Lady Tors battled back to re-take the lead with a five-run bottom of the sixth. Girouard and Zani Vela started the inning with a double and single, respectively, and back-to-back RBI singles hit by Prets and Katie Fickessen gave Ball High a 10-9 lead.

The Lady Tors weren’t done yet, though, as Rodriguez blooped a two-out, two-run single into right field for a 12-9 lead.

But, Ball High couldn’t hold on to the lead, as Manvel began the top of the seventh with three singles and a walk to cut the lead to 12-11. Woodard tied the game, 12-12, with an RBI single. Manvel then plated six runs on six singles and two errors in the top of the eighth to come away with the 18-12 win.

Seven of Ball High’s eight total errors in the game came in the final three innings, as what was looking like a key win became a crushing defeat on senior night.Leading the Lady Tors were Rodriguez (2-for-4, four RBIs, one run, one double), Lee (3-for-5, three runs), Girouard (3-for-4, two RBIs, one run, two doubles) and Prets (2-for-3, two runs, one RBI).

With the Lady Tors fighting for a playoff spot, the loss against fellow playoff contender Manvel comes as a tough blow. Ball High (9-6 in District 23-5A) tries to keep their postseason hopes alive when when they travel to take on last-place Fort Bend Marshall in what should be a bounce-back game 6:30 p.m. Friday.
