With the Friendswood Mustangs and the Alvin Yellowjackets locked up at second place in District 24-6A, scoring chances were few and far between, as the district foes battled to a 0-0 draw Friday night at Alvin High School.

In the 11th minute, sophomore Josh Murphy sent a shot on goal from the right side of the net, but was denied by Alvin keeper J.T. McCoy.

In the 15th minute, senior Evan Birsinger found junior Ethan Gamero from 45 yards out on a free kick. Gamero fired a shot on target, but was denied.

Eleven minutes later, it was Gamero setting up sophomore Diego Martinez with a cross, who put a header just wide of goal.

In the 48th minute, a loose ball took a deflection off of a Mustang and was turned away by McCoy.

A free kick by Birsinger in the 54th minute caused the Yellowjackets to stir, but the ball bounced harmlessly out of play.

In the 56th minute, the Yellowjackets finally made a buzz, but Mustangs junior keeper Joseph De Oliveria sent the ball out of play for a corner, and on the ensuing corner, senior Kyle Harner cleared the danger away.

More trouble for the Mustangs happened in the 58th minute. As De Oliveria was going to haul in an Alvin cross, the ball was knocked to the ground, but a team of Mustangs cleared the it away.

In the 68th minute, Murphy put the moves on a Alvin defender, got clear and made a run on goal, but fired the shot just wide to the left.

In the 75th minute, Yellowjacket Jesus Mendoza sent a corner into the box finding captain Carlos Rodriguez, who sent the ball on goal and saved by De Oliveria.

The Mustangs have completed the first half of district play compiling a 4-1-2 record and will stay on the road next, facing Dickinson at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
