Galveston County high school softball scores and player statistics
Ball High 7, Fort Bend Elkins 4
The Ball High Lady Tors jumped out to a big lead and held on late to win their district opener Monday on the road against Elkins.
Britaney Shaw’s two-run home run in the top of the first helped Ball High plate a total of three runs in the inning. After Shaw’s home run, she was intentionally walked in her other three at-bats.
The Lady Tors extended their lead to 6-0 with a run in each of the top of the second, top of the third and top of the fifth innings.
Elkins managed to cut into the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, and after Ball High scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh, the Lady Knights scored two runs in the bottom half of the seventh, but could not complete a come-from-behind rally.
Neither team was in midseason form in the field, as five Elkins errors led to four unearned Ball High runs, and three Lady Tors miscues allowed three unearned Lady Knights runs to score.
In addition to Shaw’s big knock, other Lady Tors having good days at the plate were Kaila Lee (2-for-3, two runs, one double) and Gabby Prets (2-for-3, one RBI, one run).
Janae Girouard picked up the win in the circle, throwing a complete game and allowing one earned run on four hits with 14 strikeouts and three walks.
Up next for Lady Tors softball is the Sweeny Tournament, which will be held Thursday through Saturday. Ball High returns to district play next Tuesday at Texas City.
