Senior midfielder Reid Kohls smashed the Pearland Lady Oilers with a hat trick, sending the Friendswood Lady Mustangs to a 3-0 victory and advancing them to the regional quarterfinals.

“It’s unbelievable,” Kohls said. “It’s such a surreal feeling to score just one goal, especially in this playoff situation. The feeling of turning around after you score, looking at your teammates and hearing the crowd is just amazing.”

The Lady Mustangs rushed out to an early 2-0 lead in just the 8th minute of the first half.

“These girls have done a great job of coming out with intensity starting games since our last loss (March 1st),” Friendswood coach Laura Peter said.

In the 5th minute, Kohls fired two shots on goal, scoring on the second shot after claiming the ball after it ricocheted off a Pearland defender.

In the 8th minute, Kohls was the recipient of a cross from freshman forward Olivia Rhodes and fired a shot on goal, which was saved but not picked up by the Lady Oiler keeper.

Kohls took advantage of the loose ball, putting it where the keeper had no chance of saving it, into the upper left 90, for a 2-0 lead.

“You can never be too sure with a 2-0 lead,” Kohls said. “Usually we like to at least get up 3-0 before we start to settle it down and try to possess more. We got more comfortable and more confident. We read how the other team was playing and how to get past their defense.”

In what was a touch of magic, senior midfielder Selina Vickery sent a beautiful pass between two Lady Oiler defenders, finding Kohls for the one-versus-one opportunity which she put into the back of the net for a crippling 3-0 lead before halftime.

Picking up the clean sheet for the Lady Mustangs was sophomore keeper Kenzie Weddel, who was never really challenged much because of a strong defensive effort by defensive midfielder Hayley Bowers and the back line of Erin Kaltenbaugh, Rhiannon Suffield, Lexi Hudson and Hannah Birsinger.

“It feels good because we are two steps past where we finished last year. Everything is a new step in 6A,” Peter said.
