MISSOURI CITY

Galveston County schools combined to bring home eight district championships at the 23-5A track and field meet held throughout last week at Hall Stadium, and several more will also be headed to the area meet coming up this week.

Ball High led the way among county teams in the gold medal count with four first-place finishes. Two of those gold medals were wrapped around the neck of Lady Tors long distance runner Dazya Mitchell, who won the 1,600-meter run (5:30.03) and 3,200-meter run (12:11.49). Lehya Williams won the district championship in the girls 100-meter hurdles (16.69), and Sam Stewart took home gold in the boys 800-meter run (2:02.72).

Santa Fe’s two gold medals both came in the pole vaulting event, with Clayton Horn (11 feet) winning the boys competition, and Caitlyn Garza (8 feet, 6 inches) claiming the girls district title.

Texas City also brought home two gold medals with Erin Garcia winning the girls high jump (5 feet) and Victoria Fontenot finishing first in the girls 800-meter run (2:25.21).

Overall, as teams, Manvel dominated the boys competition and also was the top team in the girls events. Ball High’s boys finished third, as a team, and the girls were fifth.
