The Hitchcock Lady Bulldogs continued their relentless ways — led by senior Irish Winn with 20 points — by suffocating the Altair Rice Consolidated Lady Raiders, who were considered one of their biggest threats in District 24-3A, by the final score of 78-28 on Friday night at Hitchcock High School.
The Lady Dawgs’ dominant in-your-face full-court defense held the Raiders without a field goal for the first 11:39 of the game.
With the high-pressure defense creating easy buckets, senior Taivionna Daniels lit the spark for the Hitchcock offense in the first quarter, scoring the game’s first bucket.
On the next possession Kendrick called glass as she banked in another shot and made a highlight reel block on the other end for a 4-0 lead.
Sophomore Breanna Birdow ripped away a steal, setting up back-to-back buckets of her own.
Sophomore Jimile Johnson created another steal and easy layup, followed by a pump fake and move to the baseline by senior Deasia Fury, giving Hitchcock a 12-3 lead.
Daniels converted an and-one opportunity followed by another easy layup off of a steal by Johnson, and Birdow finished off the quarter from the free throw line for a 19-3 advantage.
Winn, without any points in the first quarter, took the game over in the second quarter scoring eight points, with help from the speedy senior Taylor Kendrick with six points, to help give Hitchcock a 37-11 halftime lead.
The dominance continued in the third quarter with Winn hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to begin the quarter.
Matters got worse for the hapless Lady Raiders as Majesty Otems sparked a 15-1 run to close out the quarter, giving the Lady ‘Dawgs a 60-16 lead.
Hitchcock closed out the game strong with Winn, Kendrick and Daniels hitting 3-pointers to put the exclamation on top of the victory.
Following Winn in scoring was Otems with 15 points, Daniels with 11 points, Johnson with 10 points, Kendrick with nine points and Birdow with six points.
Next up for the Lady Dawgs is a rivalry game at La Marque, 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.
