As the regular season dwindles down for Galveston County high school basketball teams, some teams will be jostling for postseason seeding, while others will hope to just keep their playoff hopes alive.

Here’s a glance at the current state of things:

Thanks to Clear Springs avenging a first-round district loss against Clear Creek on Tuesday, and Clear Lake doing the same against Dickinson on Friday, District 24-6A ended the week with these four teams tied for first place with identical 7-2 records in district.

In District 23-5A, Texas City (9-2 in district) and Ball High (7-5) both went 2-0 last week to remain relevant in the playoff race.

La Marque won its rematch against Hitchcock to split the teams’ season series and set up a situation where the Cougars and Bulldogs could share the District 24-3A championship by season’s end.

Team to watch this week

Ball High: The Tors are only one game out of District 23-5A’s fourth place playoff spot after a 2-0 week last week, and this week’s slate of games will be critical for Ball High’s chances to reach the postseason for the first time since 2014.

First up, the Tors will get a chance to log an upset over state-ranked Alvin Shadow Creek when they host the Sharks at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A win here would definitely be a shot in the arm for the Tors’ playoff hopes. On Friday evening, Ball High will face Manvel in a road game where the loser’s playoff chances are likely finished.

Game to watch this week

Clear Springs at Dickinson: While both teams are virtual locks to reach the postseason, the winner of this game keeps itself in better position to be district champion and, in doing so, have the most favorable seeding in the playoffs. The loser of this game could end up being 24-6A’s No. 4 seed in the playoffs, meaning a tougher road toward the ultimate goal of a state title. Tip-off is scheduled 7 p.m. Tuesday.

After the dust settled in District 24-6A action last week, there was a three-way tie for the final two playoff spots. With its back against the wall, Clear Falls went 2-0 last week, while Clear Creek went 1-1 and Alvin went 0-2 to give the three teams identical 6-5 district records. With playoff spots already sealed up, Clear Springs (11-0 in district) and Clear Lake (9-2), both went 2-0 last week.

In District 23-5A, Ball High (13-0) continued to take care of business last week to remain in first place. Although mathematically eliminated from a postseason berth, Texas City (5-8) had a nice week with wins over Santa Fe (3-10) and Galena Park (0-14).

Hitchcock continued to make it look easy in District 24-3A, beating La Marque, 104-31 on Tuesday and Brazos, 91-14, on Friday.

Team to watch this week

Ball High: The Lady Tors have been cruising through district play for awhile now, but this week they finally get a significant challenge, as they face two of 23-5A’s best. At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Ball High has a tough road test against third-place Alvin Shadow Creek (9-5), and then 7 p.m. Friday, it’ll be a district championship showdown when the Lady Tors host Manvel (12-1).

Game to watch this week

Alvin at Clear Creek: As mentioned above, both of these teams are a part of a three-way tie for the final two playoff spots in District 24-6A. Obviously, one of those teams will have to be the odd one out.

Looking ahead at both teams’ remaining schedules after this one, the winner of this game will put themselves in a very good position to seal up one of those two playoff spots still up for grabs. A loss wouldn’t be a deathblow for either team, but would still put that team right on the edge of missing out on the postseason.
