GALVESTON – A spirited group of supporters went home happy Friday after boxer Austin “No Doubt” Trout snapped a two-fight losing streak with an exciting win over Daniel Dawson in a junior middleweight bout on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.

Trout fights out of Las Cruces, N.M., but has developed a significant fan following in Galveston as a client of Galveston-based boxing manager Bob Spagnola.

Because of his relationship with Spagnola, Trout has been a regular visitor to Galveston during his career. Trout’s personality and willingness to serve as a special guest at local events such as the annual Battle of the Badges has endeared him to Galvestonians during the years.

The local wing of “Team Trout,” headed by Galveston Chamber of Commerce president and Spagnola’s wife, Gina, even held a watching party for the fight at Mario’s Seawall Italian Restaurant. Gina Spagnola said the event received at least 75 RSVPs.

“It’s overwhelming, really, the level of support the people of Galveston have showed for Austin,” she said. “I think it says a lot about his character and what he’s given back to Galveston.”

Dominic Noto, who runs a Galveston-based limousine service, said he’s a longtime fight fan and, as an old friend of Bob Spagnola, came to the watching party Friday to support a boxer he feels can be the best in his division.

“He’s managed a lot of champions, and I think he has one in his corner right now,” Noto said.

There were some tense moments for local fans in the third round of the 10-round fight as Trout was knocked down twice by Dawson.

The remainder of the match was mainly controlled by Trout, though, with a strong finish in the later rounds. He answered with a knockdown of Dawson and left little doubt in the judges’ minds, who awarded Trout a much-needed unanimous decision.
