Two teams will be looking to improve upon subpar performances and another will face a gigantic step up in competition as a trio of Galveston County schools enter the area round of the girls basketball playoffs Friday.
Clear Springs vs. Humble Summer Creek
After getting a very much tougher than expected test Tuesday in their bi-district game against Richmond George Ranch, the Chargers now have to turn around and face a very good Summer Creek team.
Clear Springs, champions of District 24-6A, will need to effectively utilize its speed, shooting and full-court defense in order to topple a Lady Bulldogs squad — led by Demaya Telemaque, Halle Jones and Maliyah Johnson — with well above average height.
The runner-up in District 21-6A, Summer Creek boasts a 29-5 record on the season, with all the losses coming against quality teams. The Lady Bulldogs enter the game on the heels of an 85-20 rout of Pasadena Memorial in their bi-district game Monday.
Game time for this matchup is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Deer Park High School.
Ball High vs. Kingwood Park
The Lady Tors will have to prepare for a solid Kingwood Park team after having barely been challenged in their 65-19 bi-district win Tuesday over Houston Waltrip.
District 23-5A champion Ball High hangs its hat on its defense, and the team will need to have another strong defensive performance to slow down the solid outside shooting of Kingwood Park’s Alexis Hansen and Lauren Singletary, as well as the post presence of Allie Byrd.
The Lady Panthers finished third in a very good District 21-5A, and enter this area round game off a 79-65 bi-district win Tuesday over Lumberton.
Game time for this matchup is set for 7 p.m. Friday at La Porte High School.
Hitchcock vs. Crockett
Hitchcock will look to shake off one of its worst shooting nights all season in Monday’s 55-35 bi-district round win over Anahuac in this area round game against fellow Lady Bulldogs from Crockett.
While the defense for District 24-3A champions Hitchcock carried the day against Anahuac, the team will have to improve on an 0-for-13 3-point shooting performance in that game in order to take care of business against District 21-3A runner-up Crockett, which edged Nacogdoches Central Heights by the score of 43-41 in the bi-district round.
A win will also serve as a measure of revenge, as Hitchcock was defeated in a heartbreaker in the area round against Crockett two years ago — with multiple key players from that Hitchcock team now seniors.
Player information for Crockett was not readily available.
Game time for this matchup is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday at Conroe High School.
