Offshore action is heating up for the big holiday weekend.

Lots of boats were heading south from the jetties, and the initial reports indicate good action.

Dean Silvers and guests Ana and Bill Zimmer fished about 15 miles out and found kings, bonito and jacks busting bait on the surface.

Their catch included limits of kings, two jacks, two sheepshead, five Spanish mackerel and a large bonito.

Both of Galveston’s large party boat operations have been making offshore trips this week and bringing back some good catches.

Galveston Party Boats’ New Buccaneer made a 70-mile trip Wednesday and returned with 315 fish among which were 206 vermilion snapper, 63 tomtate, kings, ling, barracuda and a variety of reef fish. Their big catch was a 175-pound bull shark.

Williams Party Boat’s Capt. John made a 50-mile trip and returned with limits of red snapper, Dorado and Atlantic sharpnose sharks.

Both operations had their respective bay/jetty boats making trips with mostly gafftop, reds and sharks being caught.

Thursday, Polly joined me for the first time since her knee replacement surgery in early June for an inshore trip; however, it appeared we should have headed offshore.

Conditions around the jetties and Lower Galveston Bay were good except for heavy seaweed around the rocks on the channel side of the North Jetty.

East and West bays, along with Offatts Bayou, were productive for several anglers Wednesday.

Capt. Carsey Manning hosted Blake Hammond to a West Bay trip where his guest limited out on trout to more than 5 pounds. Live croaker was the bait.

Capt. Steve Hewitt fished East Bay with two guests and ended up with 12 trout using live shrimp for bait.

Anglers Tim and Ricky from Santa Fe fished Offatts Bayou and landed nine trout. Live croaker was the bait.

Carol, June and Jane Downing fished West Bay with Capt. Ted’s Guide Service and landed limits of trout and three reds.

Capt. Joe Kent is a columnist for The Daily News. Report your catch to or call 409-683-5273.
