Bacliff’s Susan Martin and Liz Burris grabbed runner-up honors at the United States Tennis Association National Mother-Daughter, Senior Mother-Daughter & Super Senior Mother-Daughter Hard Court Championships held at Walden Racquet Club in Montgomery.

Martin and Burris won two rounds by identical 6-3 6-4 scores before losing to Los Angeles’ No. 1-seeded Ghia Godfree and Linda Lyke in the Super Senior division final, also by a 6-3, 6-4 finish.

Martin and Burris first beat Teri Eggers of Orange, Calif., and Trina Eggers of Santa Ana, Calif., in the quarterfinals, then upset Montgomery’s No. 2-seeded Kathy Anderson and Jeanette Tubbs in the semifinals.


Dominic Etienne and Dana Magnuson racked up perfect 18 scores in week No. 7 of the Galveston Island Thursday Night Tennis League played at Menard Park’s Scoggins-Stiglich Courts.

Also winning their respective courts were Frank Mencacci and Becky Cunningham, each with scores of 17; league founder-coordinator Beep Sullivan with a 15; and Ann Reiser with a 13.

Court assignments for the final week of play will find Mencacci, Jeff Dubrow, Liz Castillo and Etienne on court No. 1; Brandon Locklin, Lawrence Weiser, Steve Cunningham and Reiser on No. 2; Juan Barney, Tammy Willner, Heidi Harrison and Sullivan on No. 3.

Also, MaryLou Collier, Michael Leger, Adrienne Skiles and Becky Cunningham on No. 4; Jacque Creswell, Gail Kilgore, Tony Liles and Magnuson on No. 5; and Mike Vashon, Ed Hooven, Susan Dudek and Maureen Sykora on No. 6.

Following the match ups, the league will hold its postseason celebration at The Spot, where players will be awarded trophies for high game scores, most improved and most consistent.


Locals have until next Sunday to sign up for the Bay Area Racquet Club November Junior Open tennis tournament, set for the weekend of Nov. 25-26.

The intermediate-level tournament is offering open boys and girls singles and doubles in the 12- through 18-and-under age divisions, as well as both orange-ball and green-ball singles in the 10-and-under age bracket.

Entry fees are $38.13 for singles and $46 per doubles team. There is an event limit of one singles and one doubles.
