The Galveston College Whitecap baseball team went 1-3 in their weekend showdown with the Seward County Community College Saints.
Playing a four-game series from Friday to Sunday in Justin, the Saints took the first game in a 9-6 victory before winning their second on Saturday, 5-3. The Whitecaps responded with a 2-1 win on Saturday. On Sunday, the Saints sent the Whitecaps packing with a 4-2 loss.
On Friday, the Whitecaps began the series on the right note in the first inning with a 1-0 lead when Davis Jenks singled to left field. Two straight singles followed by a hit on a pitch loaded the bases for Jenks. Bobby Henley scored the run.
It wasn’t until the top of the fifth inning when Braxton Allen hit a three-run double to center field to double the Saints’ lead.
The Whitecaps couldn’t get any closer and gave up a run in the top of the eighth inning.
On Saturday, both teams ended up splitting.
In the first game, the Saints had to use a late surge in order to win, scoring four runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit.
In game two, a leadoff single in the fifth eventually led to the Whitecaps taking a 1-0 lead.
The Whitecaps added another run in the same inning and the Saints had only a one-run response left.
On Sunday, the Whitecaps surrendered an early 1-0 lead. The Saints scored three runs in the fifth and added a last run in the eighth to seal the deal.
It’ll be back to Galveston for the Whitecaps (3-4) when they play their next four games. Galveston College will face Midland College at 9 a.m. Saturday and Odessa College at 6 p.m. that same day. The Whitecaps will face Arkansas Baptist at 10 a.m. Sunday before taking on Northeast Texas at 2 p.m. later that day.
Hosting the Island Softball Invitational, the Whitecaps went 1-3 during the tournament with the lone win coming in a 7-3 victory over Snead State on Friday.
The Whitecaps began the tournament with a 5-4 loss to Odessa College on Friday.
Galveston College took an early 1-0 lead before the Wranglers scored three runs in the second inning and one in the third.
Against Snead State on Friday, the bats exploded with the Whitecaps putting up 11 hits while Snead State had seven.
Alexandria Lewis had two runs and one hit while Kirsten Shaw had three runs from as many hits.
Anahi Hoover finished with one hit and one run and Venessa Childress had one hit and one run.
On Saturday, Galveston College was dealt an 8-5 loss to Navarro College and a 10-1 defeat to Seminole State.
Their last game against Kilgore College was rained out.
The Whitecaps (2-4) will travel to Houston to face Temple College at 2:30 p.m. Friday before facing Ranger College at 5 p.m. and Murray State at 7:30 p.m. that same day.
Galveston College will face Temple College at 12:30 p.m. Saturday before taking on McLennan College later at 3 p.m.
