POWER RANKINGS

Well, we have one week under our belts and some of our teams look in midseason form and others, well, they’re getting there.

Only five Galveston County teams won last week, which is not a sterling showing. Here’s to hopes for brighter times ahead.

A word on the rankings is needed, too. We have teams ranging from 6-man to Class 5A, so think of the Top 10 as more of a measurement of how teams are doing as opposed to this squad is better than that one. A Who’s Hot and Who’s Not, if you will.

 1.  Clear Creek

Last week: 2

The Wildcats delivered a right thumping to highly regarded Class 4A Fort Bend Ridge Point, winning 41-21 to claim the top spot.

2. Texas City

Last week: 3

The Stings move up a slot thanks to a 48-0 blanking of Class 5A Dickinson.

3.  La Marque

Last week: 4

The Cougars traveled to the island to win the annual Clash of the Causeway with Ball High, 32-7.

4. Friendswood

Last week: 5

The Mustangs took out Class 5A Alvin, 36-14. The defense held the Yellowjackets to 163 yards of total offense.

5. O’Connell

Last week: Unranked

These are giddy times in Bucco-Land, as O’Connell won for the first time in 12 games, beating Lutheran North, 32-6, to crack the top 10.

6.  High Island

Last week: Unranked

The Cardinals were in position to win late, but fell to Brazosport Christian, 62-55.

7.  Clear Falls

Last week: 6

The Knights had the lead late in the game, but lost a 15-14 heartbreaker to Terry.

8.  Clear Springs

Last week: 1

The Chargers fell to highly touted North Shore, 51-14, but showed flashes of promise.

9.  Santa Fe

Last week: Unranked

The Indians inched closer to registering their first win since 2011 in a 28-19 setback to Vidor.

10.  Hitchcock

Last week: 8

The Bulldogs had a rough go against Katy Pope John Paul XXIII, losing 30-8, but they have an off week to get back on track.

I know it's only week one, and it may be a bit nit-picky, but does anybody really believe that either O'Connell or High Island are better than any of the teams below them? I know its nice to make them feel as though they belong in the rankings, and there is no disresect intended, but come on ... Are we taking an objective look at actual power rankings, or do we choose each week based on wins and losses? There is no way that either of those teams even if combined could compete against the 5 A schools in the county.
