Dr. Ben Raimer: Galveston's Go-To Guy

Often when a difficult job needs to be done, Dr. Ben Raimer gets tapped for it. Raimer has been much in demand lately, as two of the island's oldest institutions have undergone dramatic, even painful, transformations.
Last month, Dr. David Callender, president of the University of Texas Medical Branch, appointed Raimer to lead a new health care policy and legislative affairs team to cajole more funding from lawmakers to treat the poor and uninsured.
Raimer's new job — he most recently had been in charge of correctional managed care for inmates — catapults him into arguably one of the most important positions in the county.
That appointment comes after Raimer spent 2007 leading a drastic policy change at the historically timid Galveston Chamber of Commerce.
