Part 2

Q. Why should voters choose you? What are your specific qualifications for the position?

A. Voters should re-elect me because my lengthy criminal law experience and unblemished record clearly make me the only qualified judge in this race to preside over the most serious criminal cases in our community. Criminal law experience is important because my caseload as Judge of the 56th District Court consists of 23 felony and 13 civil matters In 10 years as a prosecutor and 4 years as a judge I have supervised tens of thousands of criminal cases tried over 100 jury trials and presided over thousands of criminal cases. I have never been reversed on a criminal case never been recused (except when I have previously prosecuted the defendant) and never received a judicial complaint. I am the only candidate who is board certified in criminal law on the ballot.

Q. What are the issues in this campaign? What is your platform on those issues?

A. The community must feel that a judge will promote a crime-free community while safeguarding the constitutional rights of and fairness to people charged with crimes.

I promised to know and follow the law be fair but firm and work hard to promote speedy justice. I kept that promise in office by rigorous study and certification in criminal law and strict adherence to those laws as proven by my reversal-free record. Except for watching me in action the only way you can know that I’m fair but firm is to know that every active police organization (7) every police chief or constable who makes endorsements (17) mayors (7) throughout the county and countless civil and criminal attorneys throughout the county have enthusiastically endorsed me. Finally hard work has reduced our caseload to the lowest of the district courts in Galveston County insuring speedy justice.

Q. What specific actions would you take to make the office you seek more accessible to county residents and work efficiently with tax monies?

A. I will continue to insure that the public always has access to the court room that all hearings are held in the public that jurors and potential jurors know and understand what is happening in court and that all correspondence is answered and phone calls are returned.

Moving the trial docket is the most effective way to use and conserve tax dollars. A judge that requires opposing sides to be prepared can prevent criminal parties from languishing in jail (at the tax payer’s expense) or languishing on bond (at the anxiety of the defendant) or civil litigants remaining without resolution.

Q. Tell us a about yourself. How old are you? What is your occupation? What is your highest level of education?

A. I am 56 years old married to Alison. We have 6 children 6 grandchildren and 2 more on the way. While I am now a lawyer and judge by profession I was previously employed at a petrochemical plant where I worked during the day and attended law school at night. In addition to my law degree I have a Master in Business and Bachelor in Education. When I’m not in court I perform with the Galveston Symphony and the Beach Band. I am also an active member andor officer of various civil organizations and boards.

Finally I love my job and appreciate the trust you placed in me by electing me in 2004. I ask for your vote again. Thank you.
