I read with extreme interest the article “10,000 walrus come ashore in northwest Alaska” (Associated Press, Oct. 1). I find it interesting how the warmer climate that causes sea ice to decrease has also, in turn, caused walruses to gather on shore.
It’s amazing that the walruses realize this change and react to it. It is already known that climate change is bringing warmer temperatures and causing sea ice to decrease. Glaciers have been known to collapse, and ice has been melting.
Losing more sea ice in the Arctic Ocean by melting results is an amplifying effect that’s known as “positive feedback,” and it keeps getting worse. Many people believe that sea ice will be completely gone by 2070.
This decrease of sea ice can have horrific, permanent effects. The article already reaffirms how this loss is harming marine mammals, and what is going on with the walruses is a prime example. They are swimming onshore because they need cold weather and sea ice to live.
With the effects of global warming, greenhouse gases and other climate change, temperatures are slowly rising and are going to keep rising until there is no sea ice left. I believe this is going to result in detrimental effects to walruses and marine life in general.
