Just as sure as the oleanders on the Broadway esplanade and around the city will bloom, you can count on the International Oleander Society’s annual festival.

The festival, in its 26th year, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday in the Moody Gardens Visitors Center. This year’s festival is extra special because oleander society members have been working hard to propagate the oleanders that will be for sale.

The propagation project started last summer and we will have 28 varieties in large, dwarf and midsizes for sale. Many of these propagated oleanders are not available for purchase at plant nurseries and are indigenous to the island.

Some refer to these hardy, wind- and salt-resistant and easy-to-maintain oleanders as heirlooms, which is one more reason to propagate them. Many novices look at oleanders in one dimension, but upon inspection we see different characteristics in reds, pinks, salmon, whites and yellows.

The Grand Oleander Sale will give you an opportunity to visit with oleander experts who will help you determine the perfect oleander for your space. Invite a friend and plan to join us at our annual oleander festival.

All of the proceeds from the sales will help keep the Oleander Garden Park blooming. The Oleander Garden Park is one of Galveston’s best-kept secrets, but we would like to get the word out. While the park is solely maintained by the International Oleander Society, it is there for everyone to enjoy. The park is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at 2624 Sealy.
