I am one of the people who "always" keeps a safe distance behind the car in front of me. It may tick people off, but it's the right thing to do. I also drive speed limits. Recently, a truck in front of me had three 12 foot or longer heavy ladders tied on it. I was headed north on the Galveston causeway: The winds were gusting strongly.
I stayed far behind the truck following with caution. Suddenly, the rope broke and all three heavy metal ladders came flying just feet in front of my Mercedes all over the causeway. Had I been closer or, God forbid, tailgating — which I'd never do — one of the three heavy metal ladders would have come through my windshield and others could have destroyed my just purchased classic matchbox-size Mercedes Roadster! I braked and swerved to safety.
We've heard local stories of people killed by flying bolts or debris. Yet, daily I see people tailgating. I believe without a doubt those people have issues, are selfish and they are literally bullying others with their vehicles, literally causing danger to themselves and others. Tailgating should be illegal and ticketed daily.
