Seven years ago I saw posters “Obamacare is killing grandma.” Since then we had several attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

One would think that these were driven by wanting to improve health care with something better. It seems though it was driven by a simple need to be “against.”

Now we see that behind those attempts was little knowledge of what to do instead. Now a quickly concocted one seems based on major philosophy change. Grandma no longer matters. Well, only those on Medicaid, not the ones of those that concocted this quickly needed “solution.”

It is needed fast in order to show the savings needed to allow more of the unprecedented upward shift of income to the wealthy by giving them more tax breaks. No break for the middle class, just more for the wealthy. Paid by abandoning the increasing number of those getting further and further left behind, like Democrat and Republican grandmas.

Grandma is on MediCARE.
Are there "cuts" to Medicaid in the proposed bill? No, just a reduction in the rate of increase in Medicaid funding. Consider this. You ask your boss for a $100 raise. The boss offers $70 more. Has your salary been "cut"?
What we get is the usual "tax cuts for the rich" and the "Republicans want to throw Granny off the cliff" hyperbole from Liberal legislators. We have seen this old story for over 20 years. Only a gullible person would accept this narrative without question. It is a false scenario.

Mike Zeller

" Consider this. You ask your boss for a $100 raise. The boss offers $70 more. Has your salary been "cut"?" YES Your boss had already given you the $100 raise. then years later decided to cut it to $70. Only a gullible person can't grasp this concept.

Carlos Ponce

Let me rephrase this so that Mike Zeller will understand. "The boss offers $70 more THAN YOUR CURRENT SALARY."
"Your boss had already given you the $100 raise." This was never in my post.
Mike: Boss I'd like a $100 raise.
Boss: I'll give you a $70 raise, not $100.
Mike: You're cutting my salary!!!!!!
Boss: Mike, YOU'RE FIRED!

Gerhard Meinecke

Liberal Hyperbole? Well, I guess Rush Limbaugh was a Liberal in 2009: ". Rush Limbaugh has been laying it on particularly thick for his 22 million listeners. “People at a certain age with certain diseases will be deemed not worth the investment, and they will, just as Obama said, they’d give them some pain pills, and let them loop out till they die and they don’t even know what’s happened…They’re preparing you to die,” he said on one show. (A caller who said she was 66 responded, “You know, Rush…they want to get rid of the old people so they can insure the illegal aliens for their voting base.”) And it gets even more sinister: Rahm Emanuel’s brother Ezekiel, a physician and White House health care policy adviser is, Limbaugh says, a “central figure” who believes it’s a “waste of money to invest in health care in the elderly. ” Plus, he plans to expand hospice care. And we all know what that means!"

Carlos Ponce

I don't listen to Rush but what he says here sounds right on. Obama did say, "Maybe you're better off not taking the surgery but taking the pain killer." in response to medical questions about the elderly with a "joy for life".

Gerhard Meinecke

Boy, you wiggle out! It's not about who you listen too. The point was that this grandma slogan was a Liberal rant. When I proved that 8 yrs ago it was a conservative slogan you find a way to deflect. You debate like a politician, diverting and on to your broken record mantras.

Gerhard Meinecke

As a history teacher you cannot be expected to have the medical knowledge to know that in some cases the surgery carries more risks than potential gains and prudent use of a pain killer at times is a better option. I know that from personal experience.

Carlos Ponce

But Obama did say that the the elderly were better taking a pill despite their "joy for life".

Gerhard Meinecke

And again, stay on point, Obama is past tense. And if he said something wrong it does not make other's similar statements etc. right. - Question? Why do you think you are so much smarter than most other people? So much smarter that you are sure about "them" being wrong? Could it be that you suffer from cognitive dissonance? Think....

Gerhard Meinecke

President Obama suggested at a town hall event Wednesday night that one way to shave medical costs is to stop expensive and ultimately futile procedures performed on people who are about to die and don't stand to gain from the extra care. He said families need better information so they don't unthinkingly approve "additional tests or additional drugs that the evidence shows is not necessarily going to improve care. Maybe you're better off not having the surgery, but taking the painkiller." He then told of his own familiarity with such a dilemma. His grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given less than nine months to live, he said.
She fell and broke her hip, "and the question was, does she get hip replacement surgery, even though she was fragile enough they were not sure how long she would last?" - Now I think that is a sobering but realistic consideration. One can take that out of context, just like people are taking the "Comey better hope there are no tapes" comment out of context and slam the President over it and the remark about the Irish reporter got unfairly tied back to the bragging on the bus. - Besides, you are side-stepping the other point of my article; that after 8 years of saying "No" the Republicans had nothing ready. They are too busy, a bit like you, in finding faults.

Carlos Ponce

"And again, stay on point, Obama is past tense."
DUH, who brought up Obama in the first place. It was you, not I!

Carlos Ponce

"in some cases the surgery carries more risks than potential gains and prudent use of a pain killer at times is a better option"
Did you see the video?

Gerhard Meinecke

Again your usual twist of what someone's thoughts are about. But well, since I referred to the Affordable Care Act by the dismissive name people like you gave it, you may say that I brought Obama up first, even though it was not about him.

Gerhard Meinecke

Well, since I referred to the Affordable Health Act by the dismissive name you and others seem to know it by you are technically right, with your usual twist to make sure you are right.

Carlos Ponce

Medicaid spending actually goes UP 20% over 10 years under the Senate plan. But the Liberals want it to go up more so they're calling it a "cut".[huh]

Gerhard Meinecke

Limiting Medicaid to a 20% rise over 10 yrs is effectively a cut, considering that the Baby Boomers will swell the number of Nursing Home patients. Medicaid plays a huge role in providing for elderly Americans who have, in effect, outlived their savings. In 2015, 62% of the more than 1.3 million Americans in skilled-nursing facilities paid for their stay and care with Medicaid dollars. Medicare, the program for the elderly, covered only 14% of them.

Mr. Ponce, I appreciate your feedback, but I would like it to be more fact based, not your typical worn-out rants against Liberals. Wonder what your reaction would have been when the Liberal Founders wrote the Liberal Constitution.

Carlos Ponce

"Limiting Medicaid to a 20% rise over 10 yrs is effectively a cut,"
Do you need a MATH LESSON, Gerhard???????
Give our Founding Fathers the credit they are due in producing the Constitution. They were INTELLIGENT. "Liberal Constitution"? Sheesh!

Gerhard Meinecke

Well, the rest of the world considers it Liberal. But you know better, right?

Gerhard Meinecke

It is effectively a Cut when numbers of nursing home residents and cost per person go up more. Just plain inflation will likely exceed 20%

Gerhard Meinecke

Had the Founding Fathers been Conservative, rather than Liberal they would have kept the Colonies under the British Crown. And now, goodd night Mr. Ponce. Since I have a life beyond this I leave you to shadow boxing.

Had the Founding Fathers been Conservative, rather than Liberal they would have kept the Colonies under the British Crown. And now, good night Mr. Ponce. Since I have a life beyond this, rather than engage in dismissiveness and insults, I leave you to shadow boxing.

Carlos Ponce

So now you can look into the future? [tongue]

Carlos Ponce

"Well, the rest of the world considers it Liberal. But you know better, right?"
Who cares what the rest of the world thinks? Only UBER-LIBERALS care.

Gerhard Meinecke

Liberals? Funny, Mr. Ponce. You see I am co liberal that I believe one should take care of himself and his. For me that includes one's children's education. And so I paid for most of my children's education in Christian schools and Home Study, but still I was forced thru my property taxes to pay for your salary while you offered Socialist Public Education to other people's children. I guess for you like for many others, when it comes to enriching yourself Conservative values do not matter that much. Now, you see, my view of education is conservative, and I am told, by Conservatives, most of my views actually are Conservative, but I do not berate those that think more liberal, or conservative, because who knows what is right under God.

Carlos Ponce

When those Liberal values undermine the American way of life, I will berate.

The block grants the GOP is proposing isn't sufficient to cover the actual Medicaid expenses in Texas. Does anyone actually think the Texas legislature will cover the gap instead of rationing healthcare?

Carlos Ponce

"The block grants the GOP is proposing isn't sufficient to cover the actual Medicaid expenses in Texas." That is what the Center for Public Policy Priorities posts on its website (forabettertexas.org). They still call it a "cut" and use the often wrong/seldom right CBO numbers.

Steve Fouga

Carlos, will the Republicans' healthcare bill make your life better?

I personally won't see much immediate impact, but it has the potential to make my life significantly worse in the future. The same is true of my wife and my mom, and my in-laws. There is literally no upside for us, and there might be a big downside.

Please list a few ways your life will be made better as a result of the Republican health care bill, or if there aren't any, say why you support it anyway. And not just Carlos, but any participant who supports the bill.

Carlos Ponce

I'll tell you as soon as the final bill is available.

Steve Fouga

It's fair enough for you, as a citizen, to take that position. (...although it renders you unable to debate the merits of the bill in the meantime. You can say that you like it because it's Republican, but it's impossible to debate it on its merits if you won't state what they are.)

However, our senators and congresspersons are not in that same position as representatives of their constituencies. They MUST, if they are to be trusted as our representatives, reveal why they feel the bill is right for the ordinary citizen. They have, for the most part, either refused or made a poor case. That's because there's nothing in it for the ordinary citizen. It's worse than we were already going to have. That's pretty hard to sell.

Jim Forsythe

Does anyone really want to pass Trump care? If it is never is passed , people can continue to say how bad Obama care is .
If 50 votes never happens, then they do not have to own it. After over 8 years, a replacement should have been ready . Until , both sides are involved, it will be more of the same , repeal the others program ,while placing blame..
Do you remember when people without health care or insurance, were using the hospitals as their primary physicians, and sticking them with the bill.

"When the US goes into recession/depression, most states have to balance their budgets and cut welfare programs when they're most needed. Only the Federal Govt. has the ability to deficit spend in order to counteract fiscal conditions"
"That’s particularly clear in this bill, because most of the savings from these sweeping Medicaid cuts aren’t used to reduce the deficit — they’re being used to cut taxes, mostly on the wealthy. "

Tax repeals.
The Republican bill would also repeal the cost-sharing assistance low-income families receive to make out-of-pocket health care costs, such as deductibles, co-pays and co-insurance more affordable. Nearly 6.3 million people earning less than $30,000 ($60,000 for families) receive this assistance, said Lydia Mitts, associate director of affordability at Families USA, a health care advocacy group. The funds often make it possible for low-income consumers to afford health plans with deductibles as low as $500."
“Without this assistance, a family making $30,000 a year could see their deductible increase by $5,000 on average,” she said.

The tax cuts in the Senate bill include cutting taxes on net investment income for wealthy people, repeals a new Medicare tax added on wealthy people, and eliminates taxes on health insurers, medical device companies, and tanning salons.
For instance, the Affordable Care Act added a new tax of 3.8 percent on net investment income (basically, capital gains and dividends) for individuals making over more than $200,000 a year, or married couples making over $250,000.
The Senate health bill not only repeals that tax, it makes that repeal immediate — applying it even to capital gains earlier this year., this may be its crudest giveaway to the rich:  There’s absolutely no reason to think a retroactive tax cut will boost job creation and growth. You’re essentially increasing people’s incentives to travel back in time and create jobs earlier in the year. Or, rather, you’re not increasing anyone’s incentive to do anything. You’re just shoveling money into the pockets of the least needy families in the country.

On the other hand, this bill provides huge tax cuts for the wealthy. to get an idea, it will be 157 billion dollars for households earning more than a 1 million dollar a year, it will save 7 million dollars to the 400 most wealthy families of the country.

Gerhard Meinecke

Sir, you, we, are wasting our words trying to debate with Mr. Ponce. He is too narrow-minded to "see". He revels in conflict, like all those others that swear to "indivisible", but are dividers.

John Patlan

Get your kicks on route 66. Debate and discussion can get redundant. Hope you guys can settle this problem. I will continue to pay my taxes, observe the laws, pray for my country and pray that the Prez can get some sleep and clear his mind. Is that too much to hope for.

Gerhard Meinecke

AMEN

Steve Fouga

Well... Maybe the last part. [cool]

Mike Zeller

Gerhard, Google NPD and this will explain what your up against.

Carlos Ponce

"He is too narrow-minded to 'see'."
People will claim the other person is narrow minded only if they have LOST the argument. Have a nice life, Gerhard![beam]

Doyle Beard

you have no idea what the bill will end up being.

Ryan Holliday

The GOP plan will result in decreased premiums for people who are young and healthy, while the sick and pre-existing conditions will end up on either extremely expensive high risk pools, or just fall to Medicaid. But, because we're changing Medicaid to block grants instead of covering actual expenses States are going to end up with a massive gap in their budget where the Federal subsidies aren't enough to cover their actual Medicaid expenses. Lets be honest with ourselves, the GOP is going to attack that subsidy every chance they get and the Texas Legislature isn't going to put more money in to cover the gap.

The end result will be Texas having to get 'creative' to cover the medicaid expenses, the same way they got 'creative' to fix our education system. i.e. cutting services and rationing healthcare.

Doyle Beard

Common sense will tell one the ACA is going to be history whether repealed or dies on its own.
