But "The Schumer Shutdown" has a nice ring to it! And also a a ring of truth! There was nothing in the bill Democrats objected to - so why vote against it in the first place? Because it didn't include DACA amendment? DACA is a whole different ballgame.

Jim Forsythe

It is not a Democrat filibuster since it requires 60 votes to pass, and two Republicans voted against it and the 6 Democrats vote for it the first time. This is no longer a party line issue.

When will the Senate stop passing ,stop gap spending measure's. It just another can down the road that was passed, and nothing has changed!
Republicans hold the House, Senate, and the White House and its the Democrats fault  How many times In  the past have we had a shut down, when one party holds all three branches of the Government?

The President has not shown his deal making skills..
"Trump pledged during the campaign to use his deal-making skills to outsmart and overpower the power structure in Washington and force the elites to bend to his will" and this has not happen .

Most Democrats and some Republicans voted against the first spending bill over concerns about keeping the government funded with one short-term spending bill after another.
The first stop gap spending measure passed the House but failed in the Senate. Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, insisted on action to preserve protections for people who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

"Reopening the government probably won't solve any of the institutional problems that got Congress in this mess in the first place: Debates about where to raise spending, funding for disaster aid, the opioid crisis, partisanship and competing factions within parties. Which means: As soon as we get out of this shutdown, Congress is potentially at risk of another."

Who called for a shut down?
        Donald J. Trump
✔ @realDonaldTrump
either elect more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%. Our country needs a good "shutdown" in September to fix mess!

It was a Democratic Filibuster - AND THEY CAVED![beam]
The initial vote was 50-49 FOR but as you say, 60 votes were needed.
See:
https://www.govtrack.us/congress/votes/115-2018/s14
CAN YOU SEE THE WORD "FILIBUSTERED"?

Jim Forsythe

On one hand it is the Democrats fault, then you say they caved when they said , we believe the Republicans' when they said they would negotiated DACA. Compromising  is not caving. Would it be better if the Government was still shut down?
At this time they are getting closer to a bill that both parties can live on DACA . The fly in the ointment could be if Trump pulls another last minute change of direction.
"Republicans have begged the president to tell them exactly what he’d accept in an agreement and then stick to it. But Trump hasn’t delivered. “I’m looking for something that President Trump supports, and he has not yet indicated what measure he is willing to sign,” McConnell told reporters this week, in a telling sign of the GOP’s frustration with the president’s inconsistency. “As soon as we figure out what he is for, then I would be convinced that we were not just spinning our wheels.”
If by February 8 , they are not close to a finish on DACA, we may get to see how good the Presidents deal making skills are.

Carlos Ponce

"we believe the Republicans' when they said they would negotiated DACA."
The Republicans are negotiating DACA, NOW!!!!!!
Are you uniformed of that?
Problem is Democrats wanted it attached to the continuing Resolution, WHERE IT DOES NOT BELONG!!!!

Jim Forsythe

"The Republicans are negotiating DACA, NOW!!!!!!" Whom are they negotiating with, not themselves! If it is just with themselves, it will be hard to reach 60 votes. It takes two sides , just as it was set up.
If this is not the time to negotiate DACA, when would be?. The President has said he will not sign off on DACA unless he get 25 Billion for his WALL, which makes it Budget measure, . That called negotiating , and our President would not be doing this, if it is wrong.

If the Republicans did not want to bring DACA up at this time, they do not have to. The majority still set's what is put before House and Senate. The speaker's do not have to allow this to happen. Part of negotiating is knowing how to reach your goal, which in this case is 60 votes.

Gary Miller

The House passed the 2018 budget in August/September. Democrap fillibuster rules kept the senate from debating or voting on the budget passed by the House. Democraps prefere continuing resolutions because they increase spending and provide opportunities to blackmail congress.

Jim Forsythe

The filibuster rule exists to essentially FORCE compromise and bipartisanship, which is critical for a well functioning Government. It is a safety valve to prevent a slim majority from running rough shod over the rest of the governing body.Just as they can veto a  President's signing of a bill..Check and balances are important.

Steve Fouga

Gary, you misspelled "Democrat" twice in your post.

Carlos Ponce

Do you prefer "Demonrats"? [wink]

Doyle Beard

maybe Garys spelling was right on

Gary Miller

Democraps run for the Senate. If they win they affirm an oath of office that includes protecting the constitution. Then they violate their oath and the constitution by not approving an annual budget. Since taking over the House Republicans have passed and sent annual budgets to the senate every year. Using the fillibuster rule Democraps have not passed a budget because continuing resolutions let them spend more money and blackmail congress.

Bill Cochrane

New spelling rule Steve. Replace "t" with "p" and hope you don't get any on you.

Carlos Ponce

Not to worry folks! Starting in February there will many indictments and investigations that will leave the Democrats in a tailspin. There will be civil unrest, sponsored by George Soros, of course, but all will be revealed!

Gary Miller

Carlos! If there were a RICO indictment on the Hill and Bill Clinton crime family how many top Democraps would be included? I count 27.

Jim Forsythe

Indictments are not knew. .If they do something wrong , they pay the price. The following list does not include articles of impeachment. Statistic provided is for executive branch level offices only in each administration.

Obama (D) – 8 yrs in office. Zero criminal indictments, zero convictions and zero prison sentences.
Bush, George W. (R) – 8 yrs in office. 16 criminal indictments. 16 convictions. 9 prison sentences.
Clinton (D) – 8 yrs in office. 2 criminal indictments. One conviction. One prison sentence. .
Bush, George H. W. (R) – 4 yrs in office. One indictment. One conviction. One prison sentence.
Reagan (R) – 8 yrs in office. 26 criminal indictments. 16 convictions. 8 prison sentences.
Carter (D) – 4 yrs in office. One indictment. Zero convictions and zero prison sentences.
Ford (R) – 4 yrs in office. One indictment and one conviction. One prison sentence.
Nixon (R) – 6 yrs in office. 76 criminal indictments. 55 convictions. 15 prison sentences.
Johnson (D) – 5 yrs in office. Zero indictments. Zero convictions. Zero prison sentences.

Carlos Ponce

"Obama (D) – 8 yrs in office. Zero criminal indictments, zero convictions and zero prison sentences."
Stay Tuned. [beam]

Jim Forsythe

Each President has had problem's and it's sad that it happens. I did not include Trump's,as it will change.
Obama's total may change or it may not.
What will Clinton's indictments be issued for? If it is for Bill, it will increase his total only.
This is why the Russia investigation's are going on, so questions do not hang on for years.
Trump did not help himself, with his helping of Russia, with his latest act .
"President Trump won't be implementing Russia sanctions that Congress basically forced him to sign into law this year.'
To not do what was asked of him, does not help him.

Carlos Ponce

"Obama's total may change or it may not."
While Obama himself cannot be impeached he may be indicted. Stay tuned.[beam]

Jim Forsythe

Indicted of what? Since you seem to know, what are the Clinton's and Obama going to be indicted of?
If you do not answer, I understand.
What I'm staying tuned into?

Carlos Ponce

" Since you seem to know, what are the Clinton's and Obama going to be indicted of?"
Let be a surprise to the Trump haters and those who thought Obama walked on water. I have connections.[beam][beam]

Jim Forsythe

If you are talking about Obama, Clinton, emails- investigation, this is news that has been reported.
Maybe you are talking about Malia Obama, some wanting her to face fraud charges.
Or maybe, Uranium One, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama,.
Or maybe the Benghazi Attack.Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama,.
If the BIG surprise does not happen , what then.
What ever happens, I hope it happens with all due speed.

If Hillary Clinton Barack Obama,. are found guilty it would not have the same effect on the USA as if the same happens to Trump.
All three could be found guilty, we will just wait and see.
Obama walking on water has not happen.
Maybe you are thinking of David Blain, link below

Stay tuned!

Geez, I feel like I'm in a frickin' 4ph-grade schoolyard.

Glad we have a few liberals and indies in our forum, keeping ship-slinging to a minimum. [tongue]

Jim Forsythe

Steve , Gary and Carlos did not misspelled it, because they are using the Urban dictionary.
When someone can not think of anything else, they resort to name calling.
It has to do with their lack of any other way to get across their points.
For a group that says that they stand for family values, they are not setting a good example for the youth of America..
"Little Marco" — Dumb", "Lyin'  Ted" — Dumb, Veering On , you know the rest.
These and other names our President has used , and it does not reflect well on USA values, with the rest of the world.

Carlos Ponce

"These and other names our President has used , and it does not reflect well on USA values, with the rest of the world." Study History, Jim. You will find Trump is not the first president to "mark" political opponents with nick names. You can thank the NYT, CNN, MSNBC etc. By making a big deal out of those nicknames, they became popular. The DNC tried calling Trump, "Dangerous Donald". Hillary insisted that her team place a person in a duck costume at Trump rallies claiming he was "ducking" the issues, also a possible reference to Donald Duck. It didn't catch on. Most presidents have been branded by friend and foe, sometimes good, sometimes bad. We know of "Honest Abe", Dutch Reagan" and "Silent Cal" but also "Slick Willie" and "Trickie Dickie". Historically, opponents called Martin Van Buren, "President Van Ruin". Rutherford Hayes became "Rutherfraud". They tried branding the previous president "No drama Obama". George W. Bush had nick names for friends and foes alike.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nicknames_used_by_George_W._Bush
Among them:
Arnold Schwarzenegger- Conan the Republican
Vladimir Putin - Pootie Poot and Ostrich Legs
John Boehner - Boner
Barbara Boxer - Ali
President Truman had one nickname for everybody he had problems with - "Son of a B*tch".
And don't forget, Hillary had a nickname for Trump supporters - "deplorables".

Jim Forsythe

"Jim. You will find Trump is not the first president to "mark" political opponents with nick names. " Did not make it right when it happen, and still does not make it right now.
If that is the way you want to conduct yourself, no one is going to stop you. Did you allow students to call you names when you were teaching?
Was it ok with you when "Trump's said  Megan Kelly  had "blood coming out of her wherever", is this how you want your Presidential Candidates to act.
If this is the type of actions you want from your President, continue down the same path , if not, look for a new candidate to back in 2020.

It's  one thing to call each other names, but on the international stage it is not a good thing to do. Calling another Countries leader, Rocket Man or saying he has a small one, has helped the USA how? It may amuse Trumps base, but others do not find humor in this type of conduct.
Trump represents us all, and what he say's matters.
Wars have happen over less..

Carlos Ponce

"Did not make it right when it happen, and still does not make it right now. "
Did I hear Jim complain when other presidents and candidates used nick names? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Steve Fouga

Personally, I was just talking about fellow forum members being schoolyard sillies. Hard to take you seriously. Trump using nicknames doesn't matter to me because he's clearly a mental lightweight. He has an excuse; you guys don't. [whistling]

Jim Forsythe

A nick name, is different than someone making  personal attracts under the guise of just a nick name.
If you want to use the hate filled names, some use, you can do so.
I try not to use anything but a person name.
Again I ask you, would you allow your student to call you the names, that some  used when campaigning to become President., if not why not?
Just as I told you before, no one should show disrespect to other in such a way.

To try and set Abraham Lincoln being called  "Honest abe" on the same  level as of the name calling some do on a regular bases, is in poor taste.
"The future president was first called "Honest Abe" when he was working as a young store clerk in New Salem, Ill. According to one story, whenever he realized he had shortchanged a customer by a few pennies, he would close the shop and deliver the correct change-regardless of how far he had to walk.
People recognized his integrity and were soon asking him to act as judge or mediator in various contests, fights, and arguments. According to Robert Rutledge of New Salem, "Lincoln's judgment was final in all that region of country. People relied implicitly upon his honesty, integrity, and impartiality."

Everything you all are taking about, plus a whole lot more, can be solved by Separating Business and State.

It seems the only Separation of Powers that exists in our govt today is that of the Democrats and Republicans. This is not what our founding fathers, all, wanted for us. It is one thing they worked so hard, fought, and died to prevent, that is why they made a Separation of Powers, in the first place. They did a very good job setting up our framework, which has given us a brief amount of time to take control of our govt back, before it's too late. A separation of business and state will eliminate most of the Corruption And Waste in Washington. It takes Effort across the board. We will never accomplish anything well, fighting. And you can not stimulate an economy when most of the citizens have little to no buying power. Sure It will be like a shot of penicillin; it's gonna hurt, but it will save our country and our lives.

Christine Haas

PS. My party affiliation is beach, with occasional cocktail. Torres of the lies and deception. We need to get to the root of the weed and pluck it out. The predominant two party system is corrupt.

Christine Haas

Y'all are proliferating the division, that will not heal or make this country great again. I believe that because there are only two main parties controlling all the houses to have one party control all of them at the same time, is not really a Separation of Powers. We need to fix a lot if the issues and reform, like Trump talked about tonight, but there is way too much emphasis on immigration, and not enough on Health Care, homelessness, and education. I believe in being prepared and strong. If we want to be a strong country, we need strong, healthy, educated and/or trained citizens in it. Working together is a win/win.

I am concerned that Trump talked about how many jobs these companies are providing without saying how many are overseas; like he talked about the drug problem like the street drugs are the cause, and not the mass prescribed, under-regulated, mass produced poison, they give us, driving up the cost of insurance and everything. Why, because they fund him/them. We need to wake up, if your gonna fight for something fight for a Separation if Business and State, and put the power back where it belongs, in the hands of the people. Yes, protect us from those that mean us harm, don't get in bed with them. And doing nothing is just as bad...
