I saw Don Mafrige’s ad in The Daily News last week and have to ask: Really, Don? Public housing, again? Do we need to relive that nightmare? Look where it got us during the last two years, nowhere.
Also, to attack Betty Massey, who resigned from the Galveston Housing Authority Board two years ago and has had nothing to do with public housing since that time, is stretching it.
Your ad sounds like making millions is distasteful, but haven’t you? Negative campaigning sure hasn’t changed much since two years ago.
I must ask, when you compare your achievements in Galveston’s development, what would make the citizens prouder — your strip centers at 61st Street and Avenue T, your neglected half-vacant shopping center in the 4900 block of Seawall Boulevard or the Justice Center that stands on what was once underutilized property that is now the site of constant activity and new development.
I have heard you advocate that Galveston should be more like Houston in its land development policies, which would equate to no zoning. Is that what Galveston should look like? Is that really why you are running?
We have a bright future to look forward to, but only if we elect Jim Yarbrough who can bring unity, vision and cohesiveness to our council.
