There is much criticism held against the Galveston Independent School District, most of which is based upon outdated “talk.”
I have an incoming kindergartener next year, so I toured the district’s schools asking each “why should I choose this campus for my child?” I found that expectations for incoming kindergarten students are the same at every campus. Curriculum is also aligned across campuses (what is being taught at one campus is being taught at all).
Burnet focuses on balanced literacy, working with students to improve reading skills. Reading is a foundation for future success. Coastal Village emphasizes not only knowledge, but teaches the whole child. Social emotional skills are developed for successful learning. L.A. Morgan has a drive for growth, working to improve student’s confidence as exemplified by their recognized Robotics Club.
Oppe emphasizes not only academia, but also community partnerships to promote coastal studies. Students shouldn’t just pass, they should excel. Parker treats everyone like family. Student’s feel safe, giving them confidence to grow. They also have a dance team, theater arts and Trumpet Club.
The take-home message, from my experience, is that to pass judgment on a school you need to go and see it firsthand. Outdated “talk” isn’t accurate.
