I started my day off as usual with a cup of coffee, at the computer to check my emails at 8:55 a.m. Feb. 5, but that is where the usual stops. When I reached the keyboard to sign on, my fingers could not push the keys. My phone rang and I answered it. While I was talking, my husband said, “Hang up the phone now.”

He said, “look at me,” which I did. Then he said, “Talk to me.” When I did, my speech was so slurred that he could hardly understand me and the left side of my face was drooping. He then said, “You need to get to the emergency room now.”

I arrived at the University of Texas Medical Branch emergency room at 9:30 a.m. I was immediately put into a room and neurology was called. The tests were ordered. The test results came back and my medical history was discussed.

Dr. StephenBusby told me of a miracle drug known as tissue plasminogen activator, the clot buster. I met all of the criteria to be able to receive that drug. Once the drug was put into the IV, things started to level out. All of this happened within a period of three hours, which is part of the protocol for the use of this treatment. Thank you, once again, Dr. Busby and all of the fantastic emergency room staff, the technicians that did the echo, CT scans and MRI, the ICU and seventh floor. You are the best.
