Here is a perfect example of bias on the part of The Daily News. The story about the shooting of U.S. Republican representatives and others by a left-wing nut job was not front page news. Worse than that, it was reported in Political Buzz (!?!) that a Weber staffer was among those injured on page 3 ("Weber staffer among Republicans at ball field shooting," The Daily News, June 15).

And the follow up the next day? A page 3 headlined Associated Press article laments the GOP blaming the hostile rhetoric of the Democrats ("Dems bridle as some in GOP blame shooting on the left," The Daily News, June 16). You know good and well that had the victims been Democrats and the shooter a right-wing nut job, it would have been front page headline news reported on for weeks on end.

You, apparently, cannot see your bias, but the rest of us can. Shame on you.

I believe it was stated that Rep. Weber's staffer was at the ball field but was not injured during the shooting.

Doyle Beard

missed the point.

Jim Forsythe

"Weber staffer among Republicans at ball field shooting" was published on Jun 14, 2017 11:04 PM the day of the shooting, not June 15. The amount of time from the shooting until the story was printed in the GDN, was small.
This may have been the reason for placement in the paper.
Just as Jared Lee Loughner  shooting of  Giffords and  others, the Republicans  were not at fault for his actions, the Democrat's are not at fault for what Hodgkinson did.  He did not have a party listed on his voter card, but showed some support for Bernie Sanders.
'Federal Election Commission records show Hodgkinson donated $18 to Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign through the fundraising platform ACT Blue in 2015 and 2016.“I am sickened by this despicable act,” Sanders said in a statement. “Let me be as clear as I can be. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society, and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms. Real change can only come about through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values.”
He had also joined several anti-GOP Facebook groups, including "Terminate The Republican Party;" "The Road to Hell Is Paved With Republicans;" and "Join The Resistance Worldwide!!"
"Although the criminal is the only one to blame for his actions, politicians on the right and the left should be clear that they denounce violence as part of their movement."

But it appears in the June 15, 2017 GCDN, Jim. Check out Page 3 of the June 15, 2017 GCDN:

But I am certain that Jim Forsythe read the report before the newspaper was distributed.[rolleyes]
And why did Bernie NOT denounce his disciples when they were wreaking havoc on college campuses and towns????? If he had maybe the would the assassination attempt could have have been averted.Since James T. Hodgkinson was apparently influence by Left wing media he would have gotten the word that Bernie would not like it - if the left wing media would have reported it.[whistling]

Carlos I have voted in 15 presidential election and voted for democrats sometimes and sometimes republican. Never have I seen such hate spewed out. I know some will cite a few isolated cases but the news media is obsessed with hate. This does nothing but stir the flames Never have I ever heard someone thinking about blowing up the white house. , seen someone holding a look alike of a beheaded president, stabbing of a president which borders on a felony.I kow we have had threats on most presidents but not an orchorstrated effort like today. One can hardly watch the news with out seeing hate by a group or the news media.
MY first vote was for JFK and why cant people follow his advice from his speech instead its all about me . During the 40's people from all walks of life put their careers on hold to help their country. These are the people who made America great.
Where the hell is the news media today ? They dont have the guts to speak out about whats tearing our country apart or maybe they are a part of it. A dangerous trend is developing.

Christopher Smith

Doyle, I agree that hateful speech should be condemned and does not help in trying to find the best solutions to whatever problems the country faces. But it is not true that we've never seen anything like this before.
Pres. Obama received plenty of hate and threats. Ted Nugent comes to mind: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/04/quote-of-the-day-ted-nugent-threatens-barack-obama/256025/
And there are multiple stories from the past eight years of Obama lynched in effigy. Here's just one: http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/10/30/obama.effigy/index.html?_s=PM:CRIME
And there was even a staging of a Julius Caesar play in which Caeser is meant to resemble Obama. That staging in 2012 did not draw the kind of protests and outrage we had for the one with Trump https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-entertainment/wp/2017/06/12/delta-pulled-funding-from-a-trump-esque-julius-caesar-but-not-for-an-obama-like-version-in-2012/?utm_term=.4b5eeeac2019
I'm not saying over the top statements or threats against Trump are OK. They are not. What Kathy Griffith did was not OK. But I would say this is not new. These types of things have been going on for a while as things like civility and the ability to debate political opinions and come to a compromise are lost.

Doyle Beard

You can not show me where this much hate has gone on befor. the nws media is obessed and you are 100% wron. no one has said obama did not have threat but nothing of this magnitude. check the time by the media today compared to any other era and you can determine your are wrong. one can see how much time is consumed unless they are blind.

If one is going to hold the Democrats at fault for what  Hodgkinson did , then Republican's are at fault for what Jared Lee Loughner did.
Of course this is not true, as they are the ones that did it , and not a party.
If you are going to claim one of them  is at fault and a party is responsible for the other one , you are missing the part that they had mental  health problems. Both had list of people they were going to kill.lath problems. Both had list of people they were going to kill. ,  June 3, 2016
BERKELEY, Calif. -- One day after protesters brawled with supporters of Donald Trump outside of a rally in nearby San Jose, Sen. Bernie Sanders condemned political violence and anyone who committed it while backing his campaign.
"Violence is absolutely and totally unacceptable," said Sanders, after a press conference on the jobs market with former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich. "If people are thinking about violence, please do not tell anybody you are a Bernie Sanders supporter, because those are not the supporters that I want."

Carlos Ponce

Jim, the 11:04 PM time on the article should have told you it was written on the 14th but appears in the morning paper, June 15, 2017.
"If one is going to hold the Democrats at fault for what Hodgkinson did , then Republican's are at fault for what Jared Lee Loughner did."
Hodgkinson had a history of ties to Liberal media and often cited them in his rants in his Illinois newspaper. Where Loughner had ZERO, ZIP, NADA ties to the Conservative media.
Your BERLELY post came from the Washington Post but you left out:
"Emmett Rensin, an essayist and a deputy editor of Vox, was suspended from his job after advising people to 'start a riot' if Trump came to their town, part of a running argument about whether violent protests were an understandable response to a candidate with views resembling those of Europe's far right."
So it appeared in WAPO but anywhere else, especially the Leftist media Hodgkinson frequented?

Jim Forsythe

"Jim, the 11:04 PM time on the article should have told you it was written on the 14th but appears in the morning paper, June 15, 2017" You read the morning paper, and I read the computer copy. I did read it  on the 14th, as it was posted before 12:00. I forgot that some do not.
Loughner was diagnosed with"Paranoid schizophrenia, or schizophrenia with paranoia as doctors noon the 14w call it, is the most common example of mental illness. Schizophrenia is a kind of psychosis, which means your mind doesn't agree with reality.
His views on politics changed from the left to the right. Records show that Loughner was registered as an Independent and voted in 2006 and 2008, but not in 2010. His reality may not cared about parties.
Loughner's high-school friend Zach Osler said, "He did not watch TV; he disliked the news; he didn't listen to political radio; he didn't take sides; he wasn't on the Left; he wasn't on the Right."  A former classmate, Caitie Parker, who attended high school and college with Loughner, described his political views prior to 2007, prior to his personality transformation, as "left wing, quite liberal," "radical." The tone of Loughner's online writings and videos from immediately before the attack were described by The Guardian as "almost exclusively conservative and anti-government, with echoes of the populist campaigning of the Tea Party movement".
Mark Potok the Southern Poverty Law Center said that Loughner's political positions were a "hallmark of the far right and the militia movement."  Jesse Walker of Reason expressed deep scepticism at the connections drawn by Potok.  In the aftermath of the shooting, the Anti-Defamation League reviewed messages by Loughner, and concluded that there was a "disjointed theme that runs through Loughner's writings", which was a "distrust for and dislike of the government." It "manifested itself in various ways" – for instance, in the belief that the government used the control of language and grammar to brainwash people, the notion that the government was creating "infinite currency" without the backing of gold and silver, or the assertion that NASA was faking spaceflights.

Jim Forsythe

When you read the messages it fells like he was losing reality.
Here's a sampling of some of the messages that CNN found on Loughner's pages:

December 15, 2010:
In conclusion, reading the second United States constitution I can't trust the current government because of the ratifications: the government is implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar.
No! I won't pay debt with a currency that's not backed by gold and silver!
No! I wont trust in God

Carlos as you can see Smith says this is not new. I never said it was new and if he this the magnitude of this hate has not risen he os competely wrong. He brings up some isolated cases . It's almost 50% of the country plus the news media and many ploiticians. I challenge his to prove his point. I have msot of the headlines from every inauguration and one can plainly see the hate is almost out of control and tearing down the country. But why should a progressive care?
I left the party affiliation many moons ago. I vote for people not party.

Jim Forsythe

"There were numerous attempts on the lives of Presidents" These are some that Obama had .
I am sure Bush had a bunch to. Most , if not all Senators and house members have had threats.
Jerry Blanchard, an accountant from Charlotte, North Carolina, was indicted for threatening to kill Obama during a July 15, 2008, breakfast at a Charlotte Waffle House.  Two customers said Blanchard told them, "Obama and his wife are never going to make it to the White House. He needs to be taken out and I can do it in a heartbeat." The customers contacted the Secret Service, who questioned Blanchard. He denied making the threats, but allegedly told the Secret Service agents he believed Obama was the Antichrist prophesied in the Bible. The Secret Service later got a second call from an employee of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Charlotte, where Blanchard was overheard in the lobby restroom saying into his cell phone, "I'll get a sniper rifle and take care of it myself. Somebody's got to do it ... We both know Obama is the anti-Christ
Raymond H. Geisel was charged with making threatening statements against Obama during a bail-bonds training class on July 31, 2008, in Miami, Florida.  During the course, Geisel referred to Obama with a racial epithet and said, "If he gets elected, I'll assassinate him myself."
Three men allegedly discussed shooting Barack Obama, then the 2008 Democratic Party presidential nominee, during his acceptance speech on the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. Cousins Tharin Gartrell and Shawn Adolf, and their friend Nathan Johnson, allegedly came to Denver specifically to kill Obama, and discussed in their hotel room how they could assassinate him
Paul Schlesselman and Daniel Cowart, two men with strong white supremacist beliefs, allegedly planned a murder spree of 88 African Americans (14 of which they were planning to behead)  in Tennessee, many of whom were to be young students at an unidentified, predominantly African-American school. They allegedly planned to end the spree by driving their vehicle toward Barack Obama as fast as they could and shooting at him from the windows
On December 9, 2008, 29 year old James G Cummings, a wealthy white supremacist, was shot dead by his wife, 31 year old Amber Cummings in their Belfast, Maine home. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered components and instructions for making a dirty bomb, and notified the FBI, who sealed off the scene. The FBI discovered four 1-gallon containers of 35 percent hydrogen peroxide, uranium, thorium, lithium metal, thermite, aluminum powder, beryllium, boron, black iron oxide and magnesium ribbon as well as literature on how to build “dirty bombs” and information about cesium-137, strontium-90 and cobalt-60, radioactive materials
According to his wife, James Cummings was not happy that Obama was elected president, and planned to set the bomb off at his inauguration
Kristy Lee Roshia, 35, called the Boston office of the Secret Service on November 10, 2009, and told them she planned to "blow away" First Lady Michelle Obama while the family visited Honolulu, Hawaii, for a Christmas vacation
In 2012, a case was brought against four U.S. Army soldiers in the U.S. state of Georgia claiming that they formed a paramilitary militia, called the FEAR militia, within the U.S. military with plans to overthrow the U.S. federal government: Private Isaac Aguigui, Private First Class Michael Burnett, Sergeant Anthony Peden, and Private Christopher Salmon.  The group purchased $87,000 worth of guns and bomb-making materials, conspired to take over Fort Stewart, bomb targets in Savannah and Washington state, and assassinate the president
In 2013, two men from upstate New York were arrested after building a "death ray" x-ray device and plotting to use it against Muslims, and other perceived enemies of the United States and Israel,  including Obama. The men, Glenn Scott Crawford and Eric J. Feight, were arrested by the FBI after a 15-month operation involving FBI agents posing as co-conspirators. A court affidavit described the device as "a mobile, remotely operated, radiation emitting device capable of killing human targets silently and from a distance with lethal doses of radiation
One attempt was made in April 2013 when a letter laced with ricin, a deadly poison, was sent to President Obama along with other government officials.  Another attempt was made in June 2013, when another ricin-laced letter was sent to President Obama by actress Shannon Richardson. The letter contained a threat to kill anyone attempting to take away the sender's guns or impair their "constitutional God given" right to bear arms

Most media is biased. It is just fact. But the GDN is much less biased than that joke of a newspaper in Houston. If you're interested in a good laugh, and want to experience leftist groupthink, give it a read.

Doyle Beard

Josh I read both papers daily and totally agree.I cant remember when the news wasn't biased. Its usually slanted to the reporter's view or the publisher's view. Sad, we cant't just get the facts Ma'am. Dragnet philosphy.

Ryan Holliday

Are y'all requesting news with a neutral bias or conservative bias?

Josh Butler

I would like articles that report the facts. I am not saying most media outlets don't report facts, but they mainly publish articles that only support their agenda. I would also like opinion and cartoon sections to incorporate insights from both sides. GDN usually does a decent job. The paper in Houston is one side, all of the time. I definitely lean conservative, but I appreciate info from both sides. It is my opinion that most media outlets lean left, and only report facts that support their agenda. i

Josh Butler

I think the job of media outlets is to report ALL news, with the least amount of bias as possible. Can anyone name an outlet that does that, today? The media is creating a huge division in this country.

Ryan Holliday

Their is no such thing as an unbiased outlet...your asking for something that doesn't exist nor has ever existed. That's why we teach critical thinking in school to be able to recognize bias and still be able to distill the facts and meaning from the reporting.

Their is nothing new in what's being reported or how it's being reported. While we may have more sources thanks to social media, the content hasn't changed. What's different is that we are now using bias as an excuse to dismiss facts we don't agree with, for example look at any reporting on climate change.

Jim Forsythe

Josh Have you read the storys from the AP that are in the GDN. If so , were any ok with you.
These are some titles that are from the internet issue of the GDN. form the AP
Georgia race finally heads to voters; DC watching closely

Claudia Stevens

Back to the original question, I think there used to e a FCC regulation or even a law that rquired ALL media outlets to give different viewpoints "equal time". I heard it went by the wayside during Reagan's administration. BTW if the GDN were so terribly slanted, Michelle's letter would never have been published, would it?

Jim Forsythe

Maybe this is what you were thinking of.
Have there been attempts to apply “equal time” rules to newspapers?
Some states passed “right of reply” statutes to require newspapers that criticized candidates to give those candidates space to respond. In Miami Herald Publishing Co. v. Tornillo (1974), the U.S. Supreme Court said such statutes violated the First Amendment, because the government cannot compel a newspaper to publish information. “A responsible press is an undoubtedly desirable goal,” the Court said, “but press responsibility is not mandated by the Constitution, and like many other virtues, it cannot be legislated.”

Josh Butler

These AP articles are fine, imo. I just don't like articles citing studies or events that push a narrative or agenda. The paper up the road publishes these type of articles CONSTANTLY. GDN usually is unbiased, although I think they lean a tad left.

Jarvis Buckley

The AP stories are definitely slanted left.

Ken Hufstetler

The old reporters of yesterday always verified their stories even if it delayed submitting to print. Today, all it takes is an unidentified source telling the reporter a good story and it goes to print without verification. I have seen the same thing with the GDN.
