It’s time again to select a mayor for Galveston. The city still faces many challenges, some held over from Hurricane Ike and some that are just languishing for attention. We need effective leadership to address them.
Some people think the city government should run more like a business in order to make it more efficient. A more efficient government does not mean abolishing the rules and regulations that govern the city, as one mayoral candidate advocates. On the contrary, a reasonable, consistent and practical set of regulations would make for an efficient and smartly run city. That makes good business sense as well as good old common sense.
I believe Jim Yarbrough will bring that kind of common-sense business practice back to the City Council and to the operation of Galveston. As mayor, Yarbrough has the experience to lead meetings efficiently with full transparency and the ability to work effectively with council members who represent differing views. I trust he will guide council to review ordinances and make changes that are in the best interest of the city and its residents, not just because he thinks regulations obstruct progress. Get out there and vote!
