The coming April Fool's Day reminds us how the meat, egg and dairy industries play us for fools every day.

The meat industry has developed a whole dictionary designed to fool unwary consumers. The flesh of pigs is called "pork" or "bacon" to fool viewers of "Charlotte's Web" into eating it. Killing of stunned animals for food is labeled "humane." And, cesspools of pig waste that spill into our drinking water supplies during hurricanes are named "lagoons."

The egg laying industry is arguing with USDA whether chickens laying organic eggs should have access to the outdoors. But few seem to care that, for each hen that lays eggs, a male chick was ground up alive or suffocated in a plastic garbage bag, because it doesn’t. Or that laying hens themselves get to live less than one tenth of their natural lives. A number of states have also enacted “ag-gag” laws that criminalize exposés of factory farm and slaughterhouse atrocities.

The meat, dairy and egg industry's fooling days may be counted. Many of us are seeing through the deception and replacing animal meat, milk, cheese, and ice cream with kinder, healthier and eco-friendly nut and grain-based products available in supermarkets.

Got to stop reading these posts from these vegheads, now I want s bacon cheeseburger and I've got 2 hours of watch left. And then it will be breakfast tome so have to settle for bacon and eggs and maybe some juicy sausage. In short if you don't want to eat meat that's fine, but the rest of us don't care! All your posts do is annoy people and make some of us have an extra slice of beef.

Carlos Ponce

I hope Gregory Driscoll's Letter to the Editor is just an early April Fool's joke since only a fool would believe what is written.
"Charlotte's Web" was published in book form in 1952, first animated in 1973 by Hannah-Barbera. The word "pork' dates back to the the 13th century Middle English word "porc" which is derived from the earlier Old French word and centuries earlier Latin "porcus". The word "bacon" comes from the 16th Century Middle English "bacoun" derived from the 14th Century French "bacun" derived from the High German “bacho”.
This letter to the editor is making me hungry for bacon and eggs!

Everything Mr. Driscoll wrote is true. We stopped eating all pork products when China was allowed to buy the largest pork production company in the U.S. a few years ago, essentially turning the U.S. into a pig farm for China. Allowing that deal to go through has caused much more environmental damage in this country in order to export pork products to China. We also stopped eating processed chicken products when China was allowed to process chicken products raised in the U.S., sent to China for processing in packaged food products then sold in the U.S. Both of these deals were approved under the previous administration. China has a reputation of food handling issues that have caused fatalities from ingredients they put in dog food sold in the U.S. as well as in baby formula sold in China. The Chinese people don't trust food produced in China, which is why they prefer the animals to be raised in the U.S. and exported to them. I don't trust any food produced in China either, but that is one trickle down theory that I do believe in - that China's proven lack of conscience in pursuit of profits will have an effect on what they raise here to sell here as well as in China.

Maybe we can clear American dog pounds by selling the excess to the North Koreans. They eat dog meat in that country. Our previous president ate dog too.

Jim Forsythe

We eat things in the USA, that other countries do not.
It is still legal to eat dog meat in 43 of the states in the U.S. If you were living in a place that it is common to eat dog, you may try it for yourself.
I have know people that have eaten dog in the USA.
"Dog is still eaten or is legal to be eaten in other countries throughout the world. Some cultures view the consumption of dog meat as part of their traditional, ritualistic, or day-to-day cuisine, while other cultures consider consumption of dog meat a taboo, even where it had been consumed in the past. It was estimated in 2014 that worldwide, 25 million dogs are eaten each year by humans"

It is also legal to eat horse. You can order horse jerky if you so desire.
if you were in the service , you may have eaten horse.
"Following a series of tightening regulations by the Department of Defense, the military’s leading food producer has quietly put out a notice recalling its Meals Ready-to-Eat made exclusively from horse meat.
According to Wornick Foods, it will no longer produce the Hamburger Horse Meat MRE, unofficially referred to by troops in the field as “The Seabiscuit Special,” thanks to new Department of Defense guidelines that all MRE’s must reflect cultural norms. "

I don't know which previous president you are referring to, since it sounds like one of your deep web sourced alternative facts again.

Is this a Deep Web source, The AUTOBIOGRAPHY "Dreams From My Father" By Barack Hussein Obama? He describes the dog meat he ate as "tough". Don't have your copy of the book available? Politifact posted this excerpt for you:
"In context: Obama's comments on eating dog in Indonesia"
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2012/apr/20/context-obama-dog-eating-indonesia/
"With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chili peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy)."
And here's the excerpt from the audio version of "Dreams From My Father" spoken by Barack Hussein Obama.

"deep web sourced alternative facts" ????????????????

Jim Forsythe

Carlos, what point are you trying to make?
I do not know about you, but growing up, I was told to eat what we had. If dog had been on the menu at our house, that's what I would have had.
If all that his family had was dog, grasshoppers and snake to eat, that's what he would have eaten. It was not unusual to eat dog in Indonesia, at that time. Children eat what is provided.
"Obama actually ate dog meat as a child. The President himself admitted to eating dog meat when he was just a child in Indonesia."

Carlos Ponce

Jim, check the other things Obama admits to on the youtube link and in his book. Strangling cats, torturing small animals, bestiality with a monkey and a chicken. Not normal behavior or upbringing I would say.

Jim Forsythe

So ,what does eating dog have to do with it?

Carlos Ponce

Jim, if one of your scouts admitted to doing the things Obama did would you be concerned?

Jim Forsythe

The u tube link is spliced and put together.
Do you have some other source about all that you accuse him of?

Carlos, I had to deal with Scouts that had problems worse than what you are accusing Obama of.

Carlos Ponce

Get the original book or audio. You should be able to borrow it at a well stocked library such as Rosenberg.

Jim Forsythe

Carlos, what difference does it make? We have one President, and Obama is a citizen of the USA.
Just as Clinton is not in office, the Bushes are no longer in office, what does it matter as far as food and it's sources?

If you want to debate something other than food and it's source , start a new thread..

Carlos Ponce

Barack Obama is running a shadow government to throw turmoil into the current administration. Not to worry. He'll be behind bars one day.

Jim Forsythe

That has to do with food, how? This is about food.

Carlos Ponce

"That has to do with food, how?"
If you NOTICE, Jim, it's all in the response to Diane's post. DUH!!!!!

Jim Forsythe

I talked about eating dog and horse. I did not talk about, Deep Web, "Dreams From My Father", Strangling cats, torturing small animals, bestiality with a monkey and a chicken, shadow government.

What part of "Diane" don't you get. The topic "evolved".

Claudia Burnam

Diane, didn't that happen in 2013 when your great president Obama approved the sale of Smithfied to China?

Diane Turski

Yes, I said it happened under the previous administration.

Jim Forsythe

If you are going to boycott pork because of China owning pig farms, then you need to boycott anything grown on farms, because China is buying our farm land at a alarming rate.. As our farmers age, you will see more and more corporations owning and running farms. The day of someone being able start framing from scratch is about over . The cost of land and equipment makes it next to impossible to get started, unless you have a large bankroll.
"In 2011, the year the five-year plan was announced, Chinese nationals owned $81 million worth of U.S. farmland.
By the end of 2012, the Chinese owned $900 million in U.S. farmland – a 1,000 percent increase – making them the largest buyers that year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Smithfield deal included another $480 million in U.S. farmland, which would push the Chinese stake to nearly $1.4 billion in less than two years."

Diane Turski

The only powers I can think of that we have as citizens against the lobbyists for these big ag corporate farms are: First, voting for representatives who will vote against these foreign buyouts and the tax breaks that they are also given by congress. Second, is our boycott of their products. We buy as much organic as we can. We also only grow organic. Third, we can educate others about what kind of food they are buying from these corporate farms. Fourth, we can publicize that we do not want growth hormones in our food chain. We do not want antibiotics used unnecessarily which also is then in our food chain and facilitates the creation of the super bugs in humans that don't respond to our antibiotics. We should take seriously the phrase "we are what we eat."

Gary Miller

Jim! That brings the China share of US farms to just over 2 %.

Jim Forsythe

That was in 2012 , it has increased since.

Steve Fouga

If there are problems with the way food is processed, then argue against those processes, not against the practice of eating meat!

The natural world was clearly designed so that some animals eat plants, some eat meat, and some eat both. Humans are among the latter. Eating meat is not a plot, a conspiracy, or in any way a product of modern liberal or conservative society. It's simply part of the natural order.

Campaign for improved and safer food processing. In the meantime, don't feel guilty about eating meat. You were designed to eat it.

Gary Miller

The natural order?
Carnivoirs eat vegans, Omnivoirs eat carnivoirs and vegans. As a human I get the advantage of eating both. Pancakes, eggs and bacon is a nice combination this fool doesn't get.

Gary Miller

Humans, omnivoirs, have the distinct advantage of eating anything we like. Except each other. Vegans should shut up about their mistaken choice.

Jim Forsythe

Unless you are growing you own nuts and grains, you are kidding yourself if you think that the production and storage of grains and fruits are without problems. What countries is the fruit and grain from? Do they use pesticides in the production and storage?
Do you know what is in your grains and fruits? You will find rodent excrement, mold, insect fragments, whole insects and other things in it.
The following is allowed in our food! These are a few examples,
The amount of excrement permitted varies from food to food. Many spices and herbs, including pepper, thyme, hot peppers, cinnamon bark and oregano, have a limit of 1 mg of excrement per pound of food. Some whole spices, such as fennel seeds, ginger and mace, have a slightly higher limit of 3 mg per pound. The highest limits are on cocoa beans (10 mg per pound) and wheat (9 mg per kilogram).
Black currant, for example, can have a “mold count” — which refers to the percentage of samples showing any traces of fungi under a microscope — as high as 75 percent, while pineapple juice can’t exceed 15 percent. Do not forget that you can have up to 925 insect fragments in just 10 grams of ground thyme, for instance, while 100 grams of canned asparagus may include 40 thrips, a kind of tiny winged insect.
In 100 grams of corn meal—that’s roughly the amount required by your average corn bread recipe—the FDA says it’s OK to have two or more “whole insects,” 100 or more insect fragments, and either 4 rodent hairs or 2 or more chunks of rodent poop.
Up to 60 percent of frozen berries can be moldy, with an average of 4 or more larvae, or 10 or more whole insects, per 500 grams. To give you an idea of what that means for you: most pie recipes call for about 550 grams (5 cups) of berries.

Did you disable your "Reply" button, Carlos? No, I did not read Obama's autobiography, although I did read "Fire and Fury". I'm not sure what the relevance of Obama's trying dog meat in Indonesia is to this discussion. Perhaps that Obama is not the elitist that he has been portrayed as since he was willing to try something from another culture?

Carlos Ponce

No, I did not disable my "Reply" button. The GCDN forum does this automatically but if you reply to the "Reply" button above the post, you can reply.

Carlos Ponce

Diane, "Dreams from my Father" is an autobiography. The content is not disputed by the author since Obama wrote it himself. "Fire and Fury" is not an autobiography. Its veracity is in question by others who were present.

Diane Turski

I suspect that "Fire and Fury"' s veracity is only in question by those who did not expect their expressed opinions and behavior to be publicly available.

Carlos Ponce

Not, really, Diane, not really. And do the opinions of the deep state entrenched bureaucrats who still are in government positions really matter?
