In 2007, a group of parents of children with Down syndrome recognized the need for support and resources on the southeast side of Houston and outlying areas, including Galveston County.

From that small group, the Greater Clear Lake Families Exploring Down syndrome was founded.

The organization, now in its fourth year, provides area families with support, information and encouragement to help all individuals with Down syndrome achieve their dreams.

Services and activities sponsored by GCLFEDS at little or no cost to participants include educational workshops, family socials, new parent support, networking support events (Mom’s Night Out, family outings, play dates), adult programs, summer programs and monthly meetings to educate and enrich the knowledge of both families and the community at large.

We also sponsor Film Club, producing movies depicting age-appropriate social situations with our children as the actors — an effective and fun way to learn.

Our fourth annual Step Up Walk for Down syndrome benefiting GCLFEDS is Oct. 19 at Falcon Pass Elementary School in Clear Lake.

The Step Up Walk is a key fundraiser for the group and we are hoping for a great turnout again this year. This year’s fundraising goal is $50,000.

As we move into the future with an increasing number of families who need the local services and assistance that we provide, our goal is to be able to expand our programs as the need grows.

Registration for the 2013 Step Up Walk is available online. Pick one of our teams and sign up to join us for the event. It’s a small three-hour time commitment on a Saturday morning.

You’ll have fun, show support for an outstanding group of families and meet some remarkable children at the same time.

We look forward to seeing you there.
