Galveston’s beaches just got a lot safer.

This week, the Park Board of Trustees approved spending funds to provide a dedicated patrol unit at the San Luis Pass on summer weekends and holidays. The pass is becoming a more popular and more deadly spot. Four people drowned there last year and there have been 11 deaths at the pass since 2002.

Having the highly trained members of the Galveston Island Beach Patrol manning the sands of the pass will make the area safer and will save lives.

It’s a great thing for beachgoers and for Galveston.
