A quick note to those of you who will be drinking a few cocktails while you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this weekend. You have a choice to drink. You have a choice to drive. But if you get pulled over by authorities after doing both, you’re out of choices.
Law enforcement agencies and the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office have started a “no refusal” weekend for suspected drunken drivers that will last through Monday.
That means if police suspect you of drinking and driving and you refuse to take a blood test, officers can obtain a warrant to take the blood sample anyway. Judges will be available to approve warrants, and nurses will be on-hand to draw blood. The samples taken can be used as evidence in any resulting DWI cases.
Authorities are serious about protecting the public from drunken drivers, and they should be. In 2013, more than 25,000 alcohol-related crashes resulted in more than 1,000 deaths.
So, a word to the wise: Make smart choices about drinking and driving, before you’re left without any choices at all.
