Restoration at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basillica in Galveston is nearly complete. There will be a special Mass and rededication led by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo.

Five years ago, it was not clear that St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica in Galveston would be saved.

Damage from Hurricane Ike was severe.

Insurance coverage was limited.

And the storm had damaged not only the church but also the homes and businesses of the people who made up the church’s donor base.

The restoration of the “mother church” of what was once Texas’ only diocese is a remarkable event in the history of Texas Catholicism. But it’s also a remarkable event for all who love Galveston’s history, regardless of faith.

The rededication services for the historic church should be a cause for celebration for all islanders.
