Damage from Hurricane Ike was severe.

And the storm had damaged not only the church but also the homes and businesses of the people who made up the church’s donor base.
The restoration of the “mother church” of what was once Texas’ only diocese is a remarkable event in the history of Texas Catholicism. But it’s also a remarkable event for all who love Galveston’s history, regardless of faith.
The rededication services for the historic church should be a cause for celebration for all islanders.
