I feel that it is good that President Bush works with the Vets. He and his VP lied to the

American people get us in this war... WMD, Mission Accomplished. etc,.

Mytoby, Mytoby, Mytoby, I think I've told you the truth but you just won't accept it. President Clinton started bombing Iraq in 1998 in Operation Desert Fox. He mentioned WMD 8 times in this ONE speech:
WMD was spoken by President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore long before President Bush.
"Mission Accomplished" was a banner put up at the request of the crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln because their mission WAS ACCOMPLISHED. It did not refer to the actual war. The banner referred specifically to the aircraft carrier's 10-month deployment (which was the longest deployment of a carrier since the Vietnam War) and not the war itself. Pentagon Spokesman Conrad Chun said "It truly did signify a mission accomplished for the crew."
On May 1, 2003 President Bush on board the carrier said,
"We have difficult work to do in Iraq. We are bringing order to parts of that country that remain dangerous." "Our mission continues...The War on Terror continues, yet it is not endless. We do not know the day of final victory, but we have seen the turning of the tide."

An imperial president ruling with a phone and a pen is scandal enough.
You'd think a 'Constitutional scholar' would recall that we have co-equal branches of government, and the election of a President is only one part of it.
The people also elected the Congress.
Although too many people aren't smart enough, or honest enough, to recognize that point.

When you have a do-nothing Congress because of obstruction from members of one party (hint: big animal rhyming with "ladies-and-gents"), then we need a President who will do what's best for the people.

Admist the VA problem, I reminisce the days when Reaganomic policy allowed thousands of mental patients to run loose, etcetera etcetera. Bottom line: be good to your relatives, esp. the younger ones. They will hopefully take care of you and not the blasted government!

Obama is a liar! This is the first time I have publicly said this, but Nancy is a liar too! All of them up there are LIARS if they say they were not aware of how those men and women were being treated! It is a "scandal" of the worst kind! We left house, home, and loved ones to go stand up for right, and freedom, and for a good life for Americans, and came home cripple, maimed, mentally maladjusted, unemployed, drug dependent, and sick, and nobody gives a dam! They turn us over to a bunch of incompetent, low performing "CRACKPOTS" who are unfit to practice medical care on animals, let alone humans! ( Think I'm lying, go visit some of these Veteran Hospitals ).
I had a relative who begged and pleaded with his wife to not carry him back to the VA Hospital! They spent what little they had to buy extra insurance so he would not have to go there!
Now, as the late Jon Wayen use to say, that conversation is now taking place in DC! What conversation? You know, the one between Mr. POT and Mr. KETTLE:

Mr. Kettle got mad one day, and "Hauled off" and told Mr. Pot,...."YOU SIR ARE BLACK!"
---------The late Jon Wayen. ( Now they are playing the blame game. )
Might be why we all of a sudden made this trade for this soldier who supposedly walked out of where he was assigned to be one day and was captured by the TALIBAN,..and held captive for over five years! The old now you see it, now you don't trick is being played by Washington! "See here, look what I just did on behalf of VETERANS, I just got a POW back, now please forget all those who WE JUST KILLED, OR LET DIE!" ( That was supposed to stay under wraps!! )
I blame all of them up there, and some more than others! They are a bunch of power hungry, glory seeking fools to the last one! Nancy too! When I think about the names on that pretty shinny wall in Washington, DC and some who were friends of mine, along with the fact that MY NAME, but for the grace and purpose of GOD, would have been among them, it bothers me to no end when things like this happens!
Some of the fools who are working in these hospitals supposedly caring for these brave, handicapped, sick men and women who offered themselves up as sacrifices for freedom and liberty, don't know what serving their country is all about! That is true, yet they are succeeding at doing something at home in America, our enemies DID not do on the field of battle overseas, KILL THESE AMERICAN MILITARY VETS!
Now we have the whole thing being politicized, as always. I don't think I could be a politician, because I would have to cheat, and tell to many lies in order to survive. This is all the more reasons we should have term limits EVERYWHERE,...NAW, I MEAN EVERYWHEREEEEEEEE!
One of the reasons, we who elect politicians cannot control them is because we are slow to hold them accountable, locally and nationally! Power goes to their heads because:
    -----------Lord Acton

Ohhhh I forgot! What is that they call it when a soldier walks away from his assigned position, without being told to by superiors, in a war zone? I wonder how many more Americans, civilians or military will those FIVE TERRORISTS we traded in order to get this guy back, will kill before they are done? Chew on that for a while.

Let's see, the House passes bi-Partisan legislation and Harry Reid of the Senate sat on the bills. You must mean the Democratic Party is the Party of Obstruction! sverige, earlier you tried to convince me you were still in diapers during the Reagan years. Do you actually remember them or are you just regurgitating Democratic Party Talking Points?

The shame of it all is that our Constitution was supposed to insure that Lord Acton's observation would never apply in this country.
It took a 'Constitutional scholar' intent on 'fundamentally changing the greatest nation the world had ever known, to take his pen and phone and abuse the long standing practice of 'executive orders' so badly and widely as to utterly subvert the will of the people who elected the members of Congress, a co-equal partner in government, existing precisely to keep any wanna-be kings from crowning themselves.
Liars is an appropriate observation, one that even Stevie Wonder could see.
As for the rest of your observations about the persons involved, you are exactly on track.
All we've got here is the SAME MO we've had for the last 5 years. When the heat gets too hot, do or say something outlandish in a totally different direction to 'buy time' and 'distract', 'delay', 'divide', 'deceive'...
If I were the soldier's Father I'd be very happy he was freed, but I'd be asking him what they hey he left camp in the first place for.
Somebody else's son/daughter is more than likely to die now when they would not have had the Bad Five been kept at Guantanamo.
THAT alone deserves answers...real answers, not the BSer in Chief's answers...

    BTW, thanks for remembering Jon.

It saddens me that internal reviews have gone to the Senate for more than 10 years about the problems in the VA Hospital system. It really irks me that 10 years worth of Democratic and Republican Senators found other issues more entertaining to deal with while leaving this, supposedly, to fix itself. There have been 10 years of VA administrators that, if they didn't have access to these reports, certainly should have, didn't do anything about the problem. It seems criminal to me that supposedly educated adults would put a higher priority on collecting bonuses than to actually make sure the work was done to earn those bonuses. It totally rankles me that the Senate that chose to ignore the years of reports indicating the existence of the problems is far more intent on gaining political points and hanging political opponents than actually returning to chambers and lambasting themselves for their stupidity, ignorance, and total shirking of their legislative and oversight powers.

Certainly, this administration deserves to be knocked around for not getting ahead of the issue. However, the more important thing is to get the politics out of the issue and get it solved. The fact that our legislators are more intent on politicizing the issue tells me that they've already determined that they have neither the will nor capability to actually work on the solution. Since they don't have the capability of working on this problem, I guess probably the next best things for them to do are to float another Kill Obamacare bill and hit the campaign trail.

If I hear a single US Senate Incumbent trying to claim that he/she supports the veterans during the 2014 campaign, that, to me, should be the cue to the voters to boot him/her out of office. Clearly, their performance over the past 6 years indicates to me that the veterans aren't important to them. No other way, too me, to explain how they could blow off a decade's worth of audit reports.

How does one go about 'getting the politics out of the issue" when EVERYTHING this POTUS does is guided by the quest for political advantage OR by a desire to delay or cover up something for political advantge?
The current Administration is the Obama Administration, and after being oriented during initial transition and after giving multiple speaches on the subject, he cannot shove it off on 'anybody else'.
Obama was not elected, twice, to continue the previous Presidency, but to, as his voters wanted, 'fix the mistakes made by it'...
    Fair enough.
    Has that been done?

Jbgood, my SIL had already ended his 3rd tour when this started with this guy, but is still in contact with some folks who think Option 2 of your two choices is the one that's correct.
Negotiating with and giving in to such hard core terrorists as the folks who asked for the 5 worst guys at Guantanamo to be released in exchange for one soldier who freely left his post has already set a new high bar for Administration abject stupidity and arrogant self-assurance of always being right despite having been right much yet.
That's no small feat to do...
My guess is the President has decided to give his loopy base a round-about closing of Gitmo by end of his term by releasing a few at a time with Presidential Signing Statements, for some trumped up, idiotic reason or other.
    Hope I'm wrong...

BTW, Jbgood, have you managed to stay mad at Nancy all day....??[beam]

No sir! I'm still mad with Nancy'nem! They have really messed up big this time. Obama too! This man deserts his post, tells people he is tired of what the USA was doing over there, and walks off to join the Taliban! Six men lost their lives looking for this guy! I wonder what did they tell those six men's wives, kids and parents? I wonder if they told them your loved one lost his life looking for a deserter who threw his weapon down and left his buddies to join the Taliban?

Can good service be expected from progressive bureaucrats who get bonuses for letting Vets die waiting for health care they were promised?
BHO read on his telliprompter he didn't know until he saw it in the news.

Your donky talk is getting old.
Your halfbreed president said in 2008 he would fix the VA problem. That apparently was the last time he thought about it.
Congress has increased the VA budgets twice as fast as the veterans population grew. Presidents job is directing spending by congress.

Mental patients were put on the street by the courts, not Reagan.
The tight panty bleeding hart crew claimed feeding, housing and treating them in institutions was inhumane.
Now they are free to roam the streets and feed themselves in garbage cans.

You ignore the fact that all the leaders of the Donky party, all the leaders of NATO and the EU claimed Saddam had and would use WMD's. Congress voted for the war twice, with a majority of both parties voting yes, because Bush required a second vote before commiting troups.

Response to carlosrponce posted at 3:19 pm on Mon, Jun 2, 2014:

It's everyone's luck on these forums that yours truly stayed awake during the advanced government classes in college.

As dysfunctional we all see our governmental system (regardless of party origin) is, it's not difficult to Google or Wikipedia that "the Gipper's" record on social service and reform was much left to be desired. Reagan's lack of support to the Center of Disease Control , mental patients, relating psychological services with communism.

But, we're in the here and now. Solution? First and foremost should be faster appointments that are kept. Perhaps there should be "job created" ombudsmen in which an individual is assigned to each patient to move him/her through the painstaking process of filling out forms, rides to the doctors' offices, being by a veteran's side during intake, and so on. I, for one, and looking to see what our next President Hillary plans to do about this.

Your racially-charged term "half - - -" is an insulting racial term. Has anyone ever sat down and talked with you regarding what's proper to say in mixed company?

Again, using the "N" word and "half - - " - that's not appropriate. The unfortunate thing is that many folks of the earlier generations simply don't get this.

So, it's OK to make a problem political before fixing it while chastizing someone else for making things political before fixing them? Sorry, even digging into the upper division college mathematics I took, I have to say that doesn't compute. If politics before fixes is praiseworthy, it must be praiseworthy all around, and I can't stomach that idea.

My guess is that we have conservative and progressive bureaucrats. If it was just the progressives taking money without providing service, then where were the conservatives while this was going on? The screams, even a decade ago, should have been painfully deafening.

I'm not buying the partisan BS on this one. This was a clear systemic abuse. One that auditors 10 years ago were taking back to the Senate. Even if it was just progressives that were stealing bonus checks, there were lots of conservatives that were just letting it happen.

If Obama didn't know about it, he should have. There have been too many audits that apparently were telling the Senate about the problems, or at the very least, raising questions. There should have been outraged senators from BOTH sides of the aisle raising flags and demanding action. But no, instead it "conveniently" comes out in the open during an election year. Coincidence, or opportunism? All around? I think we can all decide for ourselves. Me, I'll wait until I see things fixed for the veterans that haven't yet died waiting.

"If Obama didn't know about it, he should have.'
So, when he gave speaches on the subject prior to both election campaigns and a few others in between, do you figure he was just reading what someone told him to say, and really knew nothing?

'If' the sky is blue on a clear day...
'If' the sun rises in the east...
'If' we can figure out how to parse every single thing so that our POTUS doesn't ever get held accountable...

Let's get the problems fixed. There'll be plenty of time to figure out who all gets blame after we quit killing veterans through abuse by neglect.

Of course, we know that many of the those blameworthy will never get formally blamed. After all, many of those deserving blame are the band that plays accuser. Good accusers never blame themselves.

    Two solutions:
Combine Military Health Hospitals with VA Health Centers. It has already been tried through the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC), which opened Oct. 1, 2010, and is the United States' first federal health care center that partners the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense into a single, fully integrated federal health care facility. It would take care of current and ex-military. Opposition comes from the fact that union VA jobs were eliminated.
Second Proposal: Elderly VA patients: Give them a Medicare -VA card. This would be budget neutral. Funds would come out of funding for veterans' health already budgeted. Again since Veterans would be using their own physicians, union jobs would be lost, hence the opposition.
Note: it has been proven that union VA workers spend time on the job doing union business, not VA business. Senators Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) in a letter addressed to Secretary of Veteran Affairs Eric Shinseki claim that from January 1, 2012 through February 2013, 188 VA employees were paid full-time to do union-related work instead of assisting the nation’s veterans.

    From snopes.com
Reagan was not involved....... Quite the contrary. The people who 'liberated' the inmates tended to be on the opposite end of the political spectum. In fact, it was the ACLU who provided legal representation to force the VA to release these patients.
Reagan, didn't close mental hospitals or put anyone on the street. Progressive views on mental health, a misguided ACLU, and politicians who "know better" did it. Then finally (the last year Reagan was governor), O’Connor v. Donaldson, 422 U.S. 563 (1975), the Supreme Court found a constitutional right to liberty for mental health patients: "There is...no constitutional basis for confining such persons involuntarily if they are dangerous to no one." With this constitutional recognition, the practice of mental health law became a process of limiting and defining the power of the state to detain and treat. The result was a codification of mental health rights that have done away with non-voluntary commitment except in extreme cases.

Lord, I wish Colin Powell had put his hat in the ring back in 2008!! This guy is in over his head to be sure! He just can't get it right!
Maybe if he had served in the military instead of draft-dodging, and inhaling, he would know a little about how to handle this military stuff.
You don't treat veterans the way they have been treated. He either knew, or had reason to know what was going on with these veterans being mistreated, and dying! Usually he does when the cameras are around.
You don't trade FIVE SLIMY MOUTH TERRORIST killers bent on killing as many Americans as possible for one American traitor! They miscalculated the American public backlash concerning this. They were trying to smooth over the sandal concerning all the VETERANS, and miscalculated and it all backfired. Now you can see nothing but political cover ups and repositioning in DC!
That is what happens on any level when Trees fail to stand up and be trees, instead of bending over in the shadow of ambitious BUSHES! A tree, has no *&^ business bending down in the shadow of a bush! This is why this country is messed up now! It is why this county is messed up!
Everybody has a God given calling and gifts/talents to help fulfill those calling when one start fulfilling those calls! Therefore everybody might not be called nor possess the spiritual gifted to be a leader! I can spot a real leader a MILE off, by just watching how he/she handles their business, and the people working under him/her! I was trained by one of the best leaders ever to put on a pair of shoes! He had an attitude, and a line of BS to go along with his skills! He knew just how to handle people over him and those under him as well! My only hit on him was he cursed to much!
Me, I was a computer freak years ago who worked for him. He told me one day, JB, you ...*&^ the &&^^^^! ...You, are &^* good at this stuff! I tell you what! You teach me what you know about all these computer programs, and I will teach you how to be a *&^*& leader! "DEAL DONE!" Opportunity met PREPARATION, and my first career, "management" took off!
Gecroix knows what I'm talking about. A leader might not be in a leader role but if leadership is lying dormant inside him/her, all is needed is to hone those skills and leadership savvy/ instincts and go for it!
Yeah! I'm mad at General Colin Powell!!

And sverige, quoting salon.com for historical record? How about looking at the Congressional Record? You will find 40 jobs bills passed by the House that Harry Reid will let go no further. When government was shut down you will find all the bills that the house passed that Harry Reid sat on. You will find a two page bill addressing the VA mess that Harry Reid said required more time to study. salon.com? Give me a break!
