Rosalie Evelyn Smith

Surrounded by her family Rosalie Evelyn Smith, age 97, died on July 15, 2017 at UTMB. Rosalie was one of 14 children born to Valcav and Ludmila Merta on August 11, 1919 in Taiton, TX.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Patrick Church with Father Orrin Halepeska officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the Mass beginning at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Old Catholic Cemetery.

After Rosalie’s graduation from high school she moved to Galveston to attend St. Mary’s School of Nursing. She graduated in 1942 with her degree as a Registered Nurse. During that time Rosalie met her future husband of nearly 48 years, Marion C. Smith. They were married in Galveston on December 1, 1943 at Sacred Heart Church and had four children, Marian Rose, Patsy, Patrick and Ted.

Rosalie was a dedicated and faithful member of St. Patrick’s Church. She was also a long-time member of the church’s Altar Society, the Order of Martha, Czech Heritage Society, KJZT and a VIP of St. Mary’s Catholic Daughters. Involvement in these various groups brought much joy and satisfaction to Rosalie and through the years she met and made many good and dear friends she would keep during her life time. They would be referred to by her family as “her lady friends.” She enjoyed and delighted in working at the yearly St. Patrick’s Church Bazaars. She could always be counted on to bake those delicious cakes for the cake booth every year.

Along with her husband, her parents and 11 of her bothers & sisters, Rosalie was preceded in death by her two daughters, Marian Rose Knesek and Patsy Bullacher; her grandson, Kevin Knesek; and brothers-in-law, William & wife, Frances Smith and Edward & wife, Ruth Smith.

Rosalie is survived by her sons, Patrick and wife Margaret Smith of Missouri City and Ted and wife, Paula Smith of Houston; brother, Charles & wife Ella Mae Merta of El Campo; sister, Elizabeth & husband Ray Kacal of Bay City; her six grandchildren: Kelly Weatherly and husband Rusty of Sherman,TX, Mark Smith of Houston, Erin Smith and Michelle Smith of Houston, Jennifer Bullacher of Texas City and Ryan Bullacher and wife Erin of Galveston. Rosalie was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Sage and Zane Weatherly of Sherman and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Mark Smith, Ryan Bullacher, John Knesek, Rusty Weatherly, Joe Hensley, and Justin Martin.

The family wishes to give special thanks to the administration and care givers of the Concord Assisted Living on Broadway for the compassion and affection they gave to Rosalie during her time there.
