Shorty Johnson (Herbert Latimer Johnson) passed away on June 27, 2017 in Buchanan Dam, Texas shortly after incurring a severe cerebellar stroke. He was 88 years old and suffered Dementia for many years. Born on December 27, 1928 in Houston, Texas as one of the many sons of Ivy Milton Johnson and Lucille Price Johnson. He had one sister (Sandra) and six brothers (Milton, Jack, Durward, Ralph, Francis, and Jerry).
He was married to Yvonne Ponder Johnson. Yvonne passed away in October 2010 in League City, Texas. They were married for 62 years.
While living in League City, TX he was member of League City United Methodist Church. After moving to Buchanan Dam, TX, he attended Highland Lakes United Methodist Church. Shorty had no children, but had many nieces and nephews that he and Yvonne spoiled severely before returning them to their parents.
Shorty retired from Houston Lighting and Power Company as Chief Clerk in the South Houston Service Center after a lengthy span of working on a line crew. As Chief Clerk, Shorty claims he was supervised by his 4 female subordinates. He also served in the Texas Air National Guard for many years.
Before and particularly after retirement, Shorty was extremely active in numerous Masonic and Eastern Star Activities, at times traveling to many places across the US and Canada handling his assignments. He was a member of the Park Place and League City Masonic Lodges for over 60 years. He was also a member of the League City Eastern Star, Arabia Shriners, Scottish Rite (33 Degree), Royal Order of Scotland, Red Cross of Constantine, Park Place Commandery Knights Templar and the Royal Order of the Ducks. He immensely enjoyed the game of golf, playing several times a week.
Shorty’s Memorial will be at South Park Funeral Home and Cemetery at 1310 N Main St in Pearland, TX at 1:30 PM on Tuesday August 15 with burial to follow.
