GALVESTON – A Galveston man has been charged with the theft of almost $400,000 in federal benefits authorities allege he collected from the bank account of a person who died in 2003.

John Stephen Davis, 64, is accused of stealing a little more than $385,632 in Social Security and retirement benefits intended for an individual who died more than 10 years ago.

Davis allegedly had power of attorney over the person’s bank account and did not inform the federal government of the person’s death, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Davis faces up to 10 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines.

He is expected to appear in court later this week, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
