SAN LEON — A woman was taken to the hospital Tuesday night after a two-car accident in San Leon left her briefly trapped in her vehicle, officials said.

Deborah Wimberly, 54, remained in critical condition at the University of Texas Medical Branch on Wednesday, said Scott Lyons, assistant fire chief for the San Leon Volunteer Fire Department.

Wimberly was pulling out onto FM 517 from 28th Street at about 9 p.m. when her car collided with another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle, who may not have seen Wimberly in the fog that blanketed much of the county Tuesday night, was not badly hurt, Lyons said.

Firefighters were forced to remove the roof of the car to rescue the injured driver, Lyons said. Wimberly was alone in the vehicle.

The fog prevented a Life Flight helicopter from landing, and Wimberly was taken by ground ambulance to UTMB.
