A man was arrested late Friday night after being accused of sneaking into a woman’s car and attempting to kidnap her.
The League City Police Department received the complaint from a woman at a restaurant on the 400 block of W. Main Street. The woman said she had left work and gotten into her car when a person hidden in the back seat grabbed her, police said.
The woman was able to stop and escape the car and ran back into the restaurant to for help, police said.
The woman told officers she thought the man might have been a former co-worker, police said.
Officers said they found a man matching the woman’s description walking on W. Main Street, west of the restaurant. He was initially arrested on a charge of public intoxication, police said.
Jermias Garcia, 21, was charged with aggravated kidnapping. He was being held in Galveston County Jail on $80,000 bond, police said.
League City police contacted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and were told Garcia was from Guatemala and living in the country illegally. He was subsequently held on an immigration detainer.
Aggravated kidnapping is a first-degree felony. It is punishable by up to life in prison and a $10,000 fine.
