A fight that broke out during a house party ended with stabbings that left one person dead and one in critical condition, according to affidavits Galveston police released Monday.
Cole Hardeman, 20, died and Angel Chavez, 19, was left in critical condition Oct. 23 after a fight broke in the 4200 block of Avenue S, according to affidavits.
Richard Lee Garcia, 26, was charged Friday with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and murder in connection to the stabbings.
Garcia attended a party along with his brother and girlfriend, according to the affidavits.
Garcia and his brother were asked to leave the party, according to affidavits. Later, Garcia returned and a fight took place between Garcia and his brother and an unknown number of others, according to affidavits.
During the fight, Hardeman sustained a cut to the abdomen and a puncture wound in his chest, which hit his heart, ultimately causing his death, according to the autopsy report.
Hardeman and Chavez were taken to John Sealy Hospital, where Hardeman was pronounced dead. Chavez received surgery for a stab wound to the abdomen, according to affidavits.
Garcia alleges he was knocked to the ground during the altercation and, after pulling his pocket knife while laying on the ground, began swinging his arms from side to side but was not instigating the fight, according to affidavits.
Officers who responded reported finding a knife in a grassy area off the sidewalk near the house and another knife in a driveway, according to affidavits.
Garcia was already in jail on a charge of family violence when he was charged with murder and aggravated assault.
The charge of family violence was in relation to an incident alleged to have taken place Thursday between Garcia and his mother, according to affidavits.
Garcia was being held at the Galveston County Jail on bond of $251,500.
