GALVESTON — An off-duty police officer’s quick action kept residents of a Galveston apartment complex safe from a fire.

Galveston police officer Dion Watson was driving to his second job when he saw smoke coming from an apartment building at Antigua Apartments at 8008 Seawall in Galveston, police said.

When Watson drove into the complex, he said he saw flames coming from one of the units, police said. He reported the fire to the department’s dispatcher, who contacted the fire department.

While the fire department was en route, Watson immediately began to evacuate the building and was able to get everyone away from the fire, police said.

Only one side of the building, which police said contained approximately 20 units, was affected, police said. No one was injured.
