SANTA FE — A man accused of torturing and killing 20 cats and keeping the remains in his Santa Fe home has been charged with five counts of cruelty to animals.

Brian Cheek, 39, was arrested in December in a police raid at his house in the 4000 block of Avenue N 1/2 and charged with the manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance.

Veronica Springer, 38, was also arrested and charged with possession of controlled substances. Police said the couple was the target of a narcotics investigation, and officers seized 9 grams of crystal methamphetamine, a scale and packing material in the raid.

Authorities said they also found the remains of 20 cats with evidence of strangulation, blunt force trauma, disembowelment and burns.

Files have not been charged against Springer for animal cruelty.

Cheek is being held in the Galveston County Jail on bonds totaling $450,000.
