Richard Lee Garcia, 26, was charged Friday with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and murder in connection with stabbings last weekend that left one dead and one in critical condition.

Garcia had been implicated in an incident late Thursday and was already in jail on a charge of assault causing bodily injury of a family member when Galveston police obtained warrants for his arrest in connection with the stabbings, Galveston Police Chief Rick Boyle said.

Garcia is charged in connection with stabbings in the 4200 block of Avenue S that left Cole Hardeman, 19, dead and another man badly wounded.

The injured man, who police have not named, was expected to recover, Boyle said.

An investigation was still underway, he said.

Garcia was being held Saturday at the Galveston County Jail on a bonds of $251,500.
