TEXAS CITY – Opening arguments are expected today in the criminal trial of a man who was driving a commercial big rig that struck and killed an 11-year-old girl at a Texas City school bus stop in 2012.

Hector Pena, 47, is charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Christina Marie Lopez, who died Sept. 24, 2012, from injuries she suffered after being hit by the truck in the 2900 block of 26th Street in Texas City.

A jury awarded family members of Lopez $6.71 million last year after Nina and Manuel Lopez filed a lawsuit against Pena and his employer, Altom Transport, claiming negligence.

Jury selection for the criminal trial was Monday.

The case is being tried in Judge Bret Griffin’s 212th District Court.
