GALVESTON — A blood drive and barbecue fundraiser to benefit two Galveston police officers will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the Joe Max Taylor Law Enforcement Facility, 601 54th St. in Galveston.

Officer Carl Lomax is recovering from neurosurgery after a stroke, and officer Chris Sanderson is fighting rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of cancer.

The University of Texas Medical Branch Blood Bank will take blood donations in front of the police station, while the Galveston Municipal Police Association will serve barbecue meals for $8.

Proceeds from the event will go toward Lomax’s and Sanderson’s medical funds.

Barbers from Lulu’s The Salon on the island will be at the benefit to shave officers’ heads in a sign of support.
