HITCHCOCK — A jury will begin deliberating today to decide punishment for a former Houston police officer convicted of manslaughter in the killing of a Clear Lake oral surgeon.
Dennis Roy Redding, 66, was in what prosecutors termed a drunken rage when he shot and killed his close friend Mark Holcomb, 61, while visiting the surgeon’s home in the Harborwalk subdivision of Hitchcock in June 2012.
Defense attorneys questioned police handling of the investigation, and contended that Redding shot Holcomb accidentally.
Redding was charged with murder, but was convicted Monday of the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Redding’s wife, Joan Redding, testified during the punishment phase of the trial Wednesday that her husband has been sober for almost two years, and the couple talks about Holcomb almost every day.
Dennis Roy Redding became visibly emotional as Joan Redding spoke about how close her husband was to Holcomb.
“That was his brother,” she said. “They were closer than brothers.”
Redding faces two to 20 years in prison.
