HITCHCOCK — Divers searched a canal in Hitchcock late Tuesday night after a motorcycle was found submerged in the water, but officials suspect the bike was abandoned months ago, police said.

Children swimming in the diversionary canal near Center Street and Robinson Road found the motorcycle at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, Hitchcock Police Chief Clay Kennelly said.

The abandoned bike, which had an obscured vehicle identification number and no license plate, was pulled from the water, he said.

A canine unit and a dive team from the Galveston Police Department searched the canal but did not find anything else, Kennelly said.

The Galveston County Auto Crimes Task Force is investigating whether the motorcycle was stolen, Kennelly said.

It was unclear Wednesday how the motorcycle became submerged, but it appeared to have been in the canal for six to seven months, he said.
