GALVESTON — Strong winds and an apparent funnel cloud knocked over a Galveston lifeguard tower Friday, officials said.

The “tail end” of a funnel cloud came ashore at 39th Street and Seawall Boulevard shortly after 12:30 p.m., blowing a lifeguard tower over, Galveston Island Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis said.

A lifeguard was on the seawall nearby when the tower fell, but no one was injured and the strong winds quickly dissipated, Davis said.

The tower did not appear to sustain serious damage, and crews expected to have the structure back up by Friday evening, he said.

The winds also lifted clumps of seaweed from the beach onto the seawall, Davis said.
